This novel really is more of a treatise on philosophies of life with an interesting and devasting hook. The plot focuses on two young people who are bullied mercilessly at the school they both attend. Taken as merely a story, it's both very graphic and incredibly sad. But this book is more than that. It observes life and focuses on the possible reasons the strong dominate the weak and possible reasons the weak don't rise up in rebellion. These philosophical musings are very interesting, but on some level, the author is just using her characters to tell us what she wants the reader to consider. Usually, these types of diatribes are not what I really want in a novel. It's a little bit too blatant. But in this particular case, I can't help but think of what a great book club read this would be and how intriguing it would be to discuss. It also had some very moving moments that brought tears to my eyes. Teetering toward 4 stars, but just not quite there for me.
