✡️ In 2024, Rosh Hashanah will begin at sundown on Wednesday, October 2 and end at sundown on Friday, October 4.
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and is a time for introspection, prayer, and celebration. The dates of Rosh Hashanah vary from year to year because it is based on the Hebrew calendar, but it is usually celebrated in September or October.
Some customs and traditions associated with Rosh Hashanah include:
Eating symbolic foods: Apples dipped in honey are eaten to symbolize a sweet new year. Pomegranates are also a common food because their many seeds represent a desire for a productive life. Challah bread is served in a round loaf to symbolize the cycle of life.
Listening to the shofar: A hollowed-out ram's horn is sounded, as prescribed in the Torah.
Attending synagogue services: Special prayers and readings from the Torah are read.
Self-reflection: People reflect on the past year and ask for forgiveness.

✡️ Yom Kippur 2024 / יוֹם כִּפּוּר 5785
Day of Atonement
Yom Kippur for Hebrew Year 5785 begins at sundown on Friday, 11 October 2024 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, 12 October 2024. Yom Kippur (Hebrew: יוֹם כִּפּוּר or יום הכיפורים), Also known as Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year. Its central themes are atonement and repentance, traditionally this holy day is observed with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services. Yom Kippur completes the annual period known in Judaism as the High Holy Days (or sometimes “the Days of Awe”).
On Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, Jewish people observe a number of traditions and practices, including:
Fasting: Adults abstain from food and drink from sundown on the eve of Yom Kippur until nightfall the following day. Young children and people who might be at risk from fasting are exempt.
Prayer: People spend the day in prayer and meditation, often in synagogue.
Wearing white: White clothing is worn to symbolize purity and renewal.
Avoiding certain activities: People avoid wearing makeup, perfume, and leather shoes, and may also refrain from bathing and sexual relations.
Blowing the shofar: A long blast of the shofar, a trumpet made from a ram's horn, is sounded at the end of the final service to mark the end of the fast.
Eating a festive meal: After the fast ends, a meal is prepared to break the fast and restore strength.
Yom Kippur is the most solemn day in the Jewish calendar.

✡️ Sukkot, also known as the Feast of Tabernacles or Feast of Booths, is a Torah-commanded holiday celebrated for seven days, beginning on the 15th day of the month of Tishrei, commencing this year on the evening of Wed, 16 Oct 2024 – Wed, 23 Oct 2024
There are several things people do to celebrate Sukkot, the Jewish Festival of Booths, including:
Building a sukkah: A temporary hut with at least two and a half walls and a roof made of branches or leaves. The sukkah should be open to the elements, and it's important to be able to see the sky while inside.
Decorating the sukkah: People hang fruit and other items from the roof, put posters on the walls, and lay carpet on the floor.
Eating and sleeping in the sukkah: Some people eat and sleep in the sukkah for the entire holiday.
Welcoming guests: Many Jews invite guests to join them for meals in the sukkah.
Waving the lulav and etrog: The lulav is a combination of date palm, willow, and myrtle branches, and the etrog is a lemon-like fruit. The lulav and etrog are blessed and waved in all directions to symbolise the unity.
Reading special festival readings: These include Psalms of Praise (Hallel) and additional prayers asking God to save us (hoshana).
Marching around the synagogue sanctuary: People march around the sanctuary while holding the lulav and etrog.
Sukkot commemorates the time the Israelites spent in huts after being freed from slavery in Egypt.

✡️ And then there's the utterly unbridled joy of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, which surpasses even the joy of Sukkot.

Shemini Atzeret is a holiday that celebrates the completion of the annual reading of the Torah. It is also known as the Eighth Day of Assembly or the Eighth Day of Stopping.
Shemini Atzeret is celebrated in a number of ways, including:
Torah readings: The book of Deuteronomy is read in the synagogue, followed by the book of Genesis. This continues the annual cycle of Torah readings.
Simchat Torah: A joyful procession with the Torah scrolls, accompanied by singing, dancing, and sometimes children waving flags.
Memorial service: The Yizkor, or memorial service, is traditionally included in the liturgy.
Prayer for rain: A short prayer for rain is added to the second blessing of the Amidah Prayer.
Eating in the sukkah: Some people eat in the sukkah on Shemini Atzeret, but without reciting the blessing for sitting in the sukkah.
Not taking the lulav and etrog: It is not customary to take the lulav and etrog on Shemini Atzeret.
Not sleeping in the sukkah: Most people prefer to sleep indoors at this time of year, so sleeping in the sukkah is not customary.

🍯 Resurrection Walk (2023) - Michael Connelly 417pp 5🍎

Simchat Torah is Hebrew for “the joy of Torah.” It is a celebration, often accompanied by dancing and singing, to mark the completion of the annual reading of this section of the Bible. Each week of the year, congregations around the world read a particular portion of the Torah, called a parashah, in a specified order. On Simchat Torah, the scrolls that contain this literature are removed from the ark, the special place where they are kept at the front of the synagogue. While one or two scrolls are taken out during readings in the usual weekly service, Simchat Torah is one of the few times of year that all the scrolls are taken out of the ark.Dancing is a major part of Simchat Torah, a Jewish holiday that celebrates the completion of the annual reading of the Torah. The dancing can vary by congregation, but some common elements include:
Dancing circles: People may dance around the synagogue in circles, with or without the Torah scrolls.
Men and women dancing together: In Conservative and Progressive congregations, men and women may dance together.
Children dancing: Children may dance with their fathers, or have their own dancing circles.
Women dancing separately: In Orthodox synagogues, women and older girls may dance separately, or watch from the other side of a partition.
Singing: Congregations may sing popular songs while dancing.
Carrying the Torah: Some congregations may carry the Torah scrolls into the streets.
Parading: Congregations may parade with the Torah scrolls.
Seeing the Torah up close: Anyone present may have the opportunity to see the Torah up close.
