14 year old Mattie Ross has earned a place as one of my all time favorite characters!

Wise beyond her years, blazingly unbothered by the fact that she's only 14, Mattie sets off to find her father's murderer in the Oklahoma Territory and bring him to justice. It's 1870's wild west, and Mattie hires Federal Marshal Rooster Cogburn because she heard he had "grit".

But it's clear that Mattie is the one with "true grit", as she runs verbal circles around every adult in the story.

I listened to the audio book narrated by Donna Tartt, who brought Mattie to life. In a post-script Tartt describes first reading the book when she herself was 14, and returns to re-read every few years.

While I love both movie renditions, the book clearly outshines both.
