Cynda | 205 comments Ahhh too bad I did not read this book as a child. I can see how all the magical people with their language play (words and numbers) would have sparked my imagination. I wasn't even aware of this when reading to my son. He would have enjoyed even more than he enjoyed watching The Letter People television program. Well if more children are born into our family and I have opportunity to spend hours with them, I will read this book to them!

I read this the first time as a teen and it was just as fun and whimsical then as I think it would have been when I was younger. Such smart word play and approachable but nuanced problems for the characters!

DivaDiane SM | 3701 comments I think I read this first when I was 11? I loved it and was really taken by all the wordplay and the concepts.

Many years later, I read it to my son. He was perhaps 8 or 9? I loved it even more the second time. It really is so clever but also heartwarming.
