I had previously read Peter Mayle's Toujours Provence and liked it so much that I decided I must read his debut memoir. This book chronicles the author's first year living in the Lubéron region of southern France, where he and his wife relocated from England to a 200-year-old stone farmhouse. The memoir is structured into twelve chapters, each representing a month, and details their adventures and misadventures as they adapt to Provençal life. They encounter strong mistral winds of January and embark on a seemingly endless renovation of their home by local craftsmen who operate on their own schedule.
Throughout the year, Mayle humorously depicts the colorful cast of local characters they encounter, from their neighbor Faustin, who provides detailed weather predictions based on his bad leg, to the various workmen, farmers, and restaurant owners who become part of their daily lives. Food plays a central role. The narrative includes descriptions of local markets, wine tastings, and memorable meals that range from simple farmhouse fare to elaborate feasts. Mayle captures the Provençal obsession with seasonal eating and the importance of long, leisurely meals to the French culture.
Mayle's keen observations and self-deprecating humor vividly illustrate both the joys and challenges of expatriate life. There are plenty of language barriers and cultural misunderstandings, but the couple is gradually accepted by the local community. Through it all, Mayle maintains enthusiasm for his adopted home, even when faced with bureaucratic frustrations or the quirks of local customs. This book is a charming portrait of Provence and serves as a pleasant break from heavier topics.
