wild concept - we shouldn't have to say the pledge of allegiance in school full stop. since I graduated from high school, I have never once had to say it ever again.
uh yeah we're not creating a new pledge of allegiance because people don't want to say one word that means nothing to them
It doesn't just mean nothing to me. It means a lot of things that I will not express to keep from losing friends.

Maybe tomorrow. Thanks for the offer, though.

Btw, nice thought, Charlie. And I see what you're saying Rhyleigh, but it does mean a lot for other people. America is not about Christianity, it's about inclusivity

I mean, I get not wanting to change the entire thing, but it's not really fair that they just include "Under God" in the middle of it when definitely not all Americans are Christians. Why should I have to say that I'm living under god when I don't believe in him?
I PLEDGE THE LEGIANCETO MERICA
BECAUSE I LOVE MERICA
AND I PROMISE TO SHOOT UP THEM TRUCKS
AND DEERS
AND LIVE
LAUGH
LOVE
TEXAS
AND PRAY TO MY GOD EVERYDAY
FOR GIVING ME SUCH A BLESSED
GUNTASTIC LIFE
I am def against the pledge. I don't usually say it but when I do, I keep quiet for the "under god" part because i'm polytheistic. ok so im not at all religious but i refuse to say i believe in a single god just bc the gov wants me to. They should really remove it, its so outdated and literally unconstitutional. what do you think "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion", which is literally the exact wording, means?

I'm technically supposed to, but my teacher doesn't make me stand up.
I think no. We have more than one religion in this country and if it gets re-written, I'd prioritize inclusiveness.

Exactly! its not fair to non-religions people and people who just aren't Christians.

I'd like to think drinking a sip of Dr. pepper in honor of the country would be better than some pledge.

Naur, all we said was the British drink tea instead of a pledge and I said maybe it might be a good idea if we drink dr. pepper instead of a pledge. The pledge is un-inclusive and needs something we can all enjoy honoring it instead (not saying that it is dr. pepper but yes).

I think we should. Many people believe in God, and we shouldn't change the pledge of allegiance because of one part that some people may not agree with

Hm, I do see what you mean, but that isn't really fair to the *17% of Americans who don't believe in God? America isn't about Christianity, it's about diversity and equality (or it's about something else, that can be for another debate topic)
*This statistic is from www.usatoday.com. You can fact-check me if you like

But doesn't that violate the first amendment? It's favoring monotheists over atheists and polytheists. The whole notion that the government is under god goes against the separation of church and state

I understand your guys' thoughts, but you don't even have to say that part of the pledge if you don't believe in God or are uncomfortable with it. That part of the pledge is just saying that the nation is 'under god' which means it's loved and protected by God. it's not saying everyone in the nation believes in God

I see where you're coming from, but the point is not whether or not I'm saying it. The point is that it gives a signal that the government prefers certain religions over others. It simply doesn't seem correct in any way at all that it should be allowed to send a signal like that

It's not about preferring certain religions, it's about the vast majority of people in the US are Christian and believe in God. Plus, like I said, that line in the pledge is showing that God loves everyone in the USA
But some people are sensitive about that. Some non-religious people get very annoyed or even angry when religion enters their daily lives. I don't love it when I encounter religion, but I can deal with it. But some people can't.

First of all, I disagree with the notion that you have to be Christian to believe in a single god. Heard of Jews and Muslims before? Yeah, they believe in a single god too.
Secondly, it frustrates me that you're saying we should disrespect certain people just because they're not with the majority. (I would like to add that 30% of us adults are religiously unaffiliated, according to the Pew Research Center, so it's not really a 'vast majority'.) And it is certainly about preferring certain religions. I don't believe in a single god. And it's not okay for my government to tell me otherwise. Instead, it should respect and acknowledge the diversity of faith in our country, not try to stuff it all under the one label the politicians in power like best.
Also, the line doesn't show that the god loves everyone in the USA. It shows that the government is under the god, which I know is basically what it says, but it lights up the government in a way that I don't feel is morally right to do.
