Stacey | 610 comments Welcome to Team Men in Black!

The team tracking spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Please use this for tracking. Alternatively, you can post here. Make sure to include the link to the book version you read, completion date, and all #s it would work for (or the color card you are completing).
Instructions can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Stacey | 610 comments Welcome to Team Men in Black! Please introduce yourself. Have you played before? Can you recommend any great books (important for all of our Reverse Cards!)

message 11: by Elen (new)

Elen | 746 comments Hi everyone, welcome to Team Men in Black!

My name is Elen (she/her/hers), I'm a medical laboratory scientist from Estonia.

This is my 8th time playing UNO and being co-captain. UNO is the challenge that got me hooked onto other team challenges, so I'm particularly excited for it every year. I really enjoy UNO because it is a no-pressure challenge - perfect for the new year, and a lot of fun!
Right now, I read mostly thriller/mystery/crime, and a little bit of fantasy, and sci-fi. I am not too keen on romance (romance as a subgenre is okay).

Don't hesitate to ask questions; we are here to help. You can add your books here if the tracking spreadsheet is not for you or to the tracking spreadsheet (link in message 4).

My UNO shelf: uno-2025

Claire | 243 comments Hi everyone,
I’m Claire from Belgium. I am an avid reader, particularly literary fiction and thrillers, fantasy and historical fiction, but if needed I read everything.
I played UNO before, but have been off Goodreads for a few years.
My uno shelf is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
I’m really looking forward to this.
My last great read was Prophet Song. I’ll try to make a list of others too.

I asked permission to see the spreadsheet on my gmail account of la.dulcinella. Hope you can help.

message 13: by Geralyn (new)

Geralyn | 17 comments Hello, everyone!

I’m Geralyn (she/her/hers). I’m a psychology professor and researcher living in Florida.

I have never played UNO before. My sister has and loved it so she put me up to this lol.

A couple of books I’ve read that I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend to others include The Measure, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (trigger warnings; gun violence, suicide), The Song of Achilles, They Both Die at the End (trigger warnings death, grief, trauma), and Alone with You in the Ether.

Should we go ahead and start choosing our February reads and adding them to the spreadsheet or here?

message 14: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 610 comments Welcome! I'm Stacey, one of your captains. This is my 5th year playing and I love UNO! I'm in Ohio and I'm a biomedical engineering professor. I have a daughter who is still at home (for a bit longer), husband, and dog. My go to genres are horror, scifi, and thriller, although some of my favorite reads are in genres that aren't my favorites. A good story is a good story.

I'm very much an engineer, so I love spreadsheets. Sorry about access - everyone should be able to use it now. We can discuss here, but feel free to claim in the spreadsheet. It is how I'll keep track.

I'm a huge fan of Tana French, Mira Grant, and Becky Chambers. Some books I recommend:
When All Is Said by Anne Griffin Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy The Free People's Village by Sim Kern Broken (In the Best Possible Way) by Jenny Lawson

message 15: by Sarah (last edited Jan 23, 2025 08:45PM) (new)

Sarah (psitssarahh) | 419 comments Hi all!! I'm Sarah (she/her/hers)

So beyond excited for my favorite time of the year! This will be my 8th year playing and I have been waiting! My go to genre is romance, but lately I have been really enjoying poetry and non-fiction self help (I'm a therapist so I love recommending books to folks and won't recommend a book I haven't read yet). I also really enjoy horror, fantasy and graphic novels.

I will be moving in February so I am sure that I will be listening to a lot of books while I pack, organize, and clean. I will make sure that I am editing the spreadsheet as quickly as possible but I will likely be much faster to respond when the move is done.

Can't wait to play with y'all!!

message 16: by KayLynn (last edited Jan 24, 2025 10:20AM) (new)

KayLynn Zollinger (kaylynnskorner) | 268 comments Hello group!
I'm KayLynn, from Utah, USA. This is my second time around with UNO and I'm really excited to participate again! I will read just about anything but my favorites are YA, fantasy, romance and thriller. I have a ridiculously huge TBR list, so I plan to just choose what to read in February based on what the group needs. I have Kindle Unlimited and my local library has a huge selection of ebooks and dead tree versions so I'm sure I can find things to fill the weird niches we need. I've been going through everyone's read lists and I have a few books on my tbr that will count. I'm currently in the middle of The Dresden Files, was given Legends and Lattes for Christmas, and definitely more that I'll go back through and list. If you're looking for recommendations: Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco. A Mango Shaped Space by Wendy Mass. And Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz (recommend the audiobook, which is narrated by Lin Manuel Miranda!!) Do NOT recommend reading Wicked. Watch the movie or musical and stay untraumatized.
I'm a stay at home mom to a kiddo with autism/adhd so I listen to a lot of books when I'm not helping them.

My UNO shelf is: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Stacey | 610 comments Welcome! When you have a chance, take a look at our cards and claim any of the color cards that you would like. We have 5 Wild Draw 4s, so we can have duplicates (but only 1 per card).

For our new members - feel free to ask questions. We want this to be fun.

message 18: by Claire (new)

Claire | 243 comments Do we claim the cards here or in the spreadsheet?

message 19: by Elen (new)

Elen | 746 comments Welcome on board :)

@Claire - I'd say both, or at least here. Just to be sure that everyone sees what is claimed or not.

If someone can't add books to tracking SS, Stacy or I will do it, happily :)

message 20: by Claire (new)

Stacey or Elen, can you add the books of this and the former message to the spreadsheet so i can learn how to do it in the future? Thank you.

message 22: by Elen (last edited Jan 24, 2025 01:37PM) (new)

Elen | 746 comments @Claire - Everything is okay. I'm not sure about Blue 9 - for me, it's more gray than blue cover.
Stacey, what do you think?

Let me know, how you like Ragnar JĂłnasson book? I was planning to start this series this year too

Elen | 746 comments Claire wrote: "Stacey or Elen, can you add the books of this and the former message to the spreadsheet so i can learn how to do it in the future? Thank you..."

Right now, I added everything with the information I had. As we are in the planning stages right now, you can delete any book if you don't fancy reading it in the upcoming month. Just let us know, so someone else could claim it ))

Later, after finishing or while reading you can add characters (meaningful not random)

message 25: by Claire (new)

Claire | 243 comments No problem and thank you, Elen. I’ll replace the book for 9 blue by this one
Het woud Het woud (Bodenstein & Kirchhoff #8) by Nele Neuhaus Nele Neuhaus Author’s name starts with N. Then we don’t risk discussions.

message 26: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 610 comments I agree with Elen on the other blue 9, but I'm ok with the replacement. Looks like you have some good books to read.

There are plenty of other books if others want to start claiming.

message 27: by Charly (new)

Charly Hart (charlyhart) | 212 comments Hello Everyone!

Sorry for the late check-in, been sick all week.

My name is Charly, and I live in Orange County, CA. I typically read fantasy, romance, dark romance, and some thrillers. Currently reading Onyx Storm and loving it!! I'll look at the tracker when I get home and see what I have to help out with some cards. This is my 7th year playing; I took last year off because grad school was way more than I could handle plus reading.

message 28: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 610 comments Welcome Charly, you aren't late, you are perfectly on time. Glad you here, hope you feel better soon.

message 29: by Dominique (new)

Dominique Thomas | 25 comments Hey all! I am Dominique! I am in Cheyenne WY. I am really branching out into horror/thriller but i really do read a lot of romance. This is my second year doing Uno and im SO exicited for this year! Recently my favorite book that I cant stop recommending is Slewfoot by Brom!

message 30: by Charly (last edited Jan 24, 2025 09:19PM) (new)

Charly Hart (charlyhart) | 212 comments I went through my current TBR, and here are 4 books I will read for sure. I'm not able to add them to the tracking. Let me know about the blue covers if they are blue enough, if not I can keep looking to see what I have.

9 Blue: Lights Out by Navessa Allen - is this enough blue for the cover? Lights Out

1 Blue: One Last Rainy Day by Kate Stewart One Last Rainy Day: The Legacy of a Prince

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Crescent City - House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas House of Sky and Breath

9 Blue - not blue enough
1 Blue - should be just over 50% mark

message 32: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 610 comments I agree with Elen on the blue covers. Charly - is the issue with the spreadsheet or are you working off of a phone? Feel free to post here and we can handle it.

Color covers - if we use Charly's for Blue 1 we have the following open:
Blue 9
Green 7
3 Wild Draw 4s (3 Yellow, 0 Blue, 5 Blue, Green 1 or up to 2 Green 2s)

message 33: by Charly (new)

Charly Hart (charlyhart) | 212 comments I'm working off the spreadsheet on my computer, it says view only.

I went through the rest of what I have, I can read for Green 2 if this is enough green for the cover, I hope: Tangled Up in You

I'll read 1 Blue- been wanting to re-read this now for a while. One of my favorite series <3

message 34: by Elen (new)

Elen | 746 comments Stacey wrote: "3 Wild Draw 4s (3 Yellow, 0 Blue, 5 Blue, Green 1 or up to 2 Green 2s)"

1x Green 1 and 2x Green 7 )) would be correct

message 35: by Elen (new)

Elen | 746 comments Charly wrote: "I'm working off the spreadsheet on my computer, it says view only."

You're looking at the official SS - only Stacey and I can edit it.

Tracking SS is in message 4: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 36: by Charly (new)

Charly Hart (charlyhart) | 212 comments I keep opening up the tracking in message 4 and it says view only still. I requested access to edit on it.

message 37: by Dominique (last edited Jan 26, 2025 04:11PM) (new)

Dominique Thomas | 25 comments I have been looking through my TBR and I could be put down for:
3 with Heartless by Marissa Meyers (title)
2 with Throttled by Lauren Asher (title)

I wont lie, i dont use goodreads very often except for my own reading tracking so I'm not sure how to link the books within the thread. If we get access to add in our own books to the spreadsheet, I will be more than happy to add them there as well, but until then I'll just stumble through trying to figure it out!

message 38: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 610 comments Charly wrote: "I keep opening up the tracking in message 4 and it says view only still. I requested access to edit on it."

I see that you were able to find it and sign up for a card. The spreadsheet should be open for anyone to edit (although it wasn't initially).

message 39: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 610 comments Dominique, feel free to post here while figuring things out. For the non-color cards we ask you to put down all potential ways that a book works so we can put them where they are most needed. (For example, Heartless can also be P for Lady Catherine's last name). You can always update after you are done reading.

As for linking books in the thread, at the top of the comment box is a blue link that says add book/author. If you add from there it will automatically link. At the bottom are options for link (title) or cover if you want to display the book cover.

Biggest help will be making sure you save the correct edition of the book on your uno shelf if cover color is important.

No, you're right, it's in only view mode (looked up without mail). Only Stacey can give access

message 43: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 610 comments Sorry! Thought I fixed that. Charly, I gave you permissions, but I think I fixed the permissions for everyone now (I hope).

Mariam (mariam_al-sharkawi) | 18 comments Hi everyone, I have just joined the team as a reserve player.

My name is Mariam and I am a senior pharmacy student, and I had an immense love for reading and books since I was very young.

This is my first uno challenge and I hope that there will be many more to come :)

I think we are all here now, just in time as we start soon. We have a lot of the color covers claimed, but still plenty to choose from. Feel free to grab one if you like.
