Are the ten commandments displayed in public schools? I didn't know about this.

I heard on NPR news that they're going to display them in public schools in multiple states, but you can fact check me. I meant this more generally though, like, should they be in schools or not?

i heard that too. like um, first amendment anybody???? im sure that if the same thing happened but like with islam or smth, it would be totally rejected.

I think... no. Not everyone is Christian, and for many people, the Ten Commandments mean nothing to them. It's just pushing your beliefs on kids, and that's not OK. The point of schools is to educate kids about what they need for life, like math and language and basic science, etc - then, they can decide themselves what to believe.

EXACTLY. Like, I'm Christian and this isn't cool. School is a place for education. It's fine if it's a private Christian school but public schools? This is so frustrating.

I didn't even know this was happening until I read this just now. I honestly think it's bull crap because they are pushing people to change people's beliefs and that's just not right. I think that people should have a choice if they want to follow the Commandments. School is not here to teach us religious stuff, it's here to make us learn school stuff.

No I don't think they should be displayed because many people aren't Christian.

It's a violation of the first amendment. What happened to the separation of church and state?

hes the oklahoma state superintendent of public instruction (very long title for whatever reason) and he's the same guy who set a mandate that requires every public school in oklahoma to incorporate the bible (which includes the ten commandments) into the curriculum for grades five to twelve.

it is also worth mentioning that oklahoma ranks 49th of out the 50 states in terms of education so...do with that information what you will...

he wanted all classrooms to have a bible for "historical significance" towards the united states. he also set some very specific requirements for the bibles, so that in the end the only possible bible version left that you could reliably find was the "trump bible", whose purchases fund trump's campaigns....what an interesting coincidence.

I mean, I see why reading a Bible can be educational in the sense that you can learn what others are believing and there may be some historical information, but giving it to kids (especially a Trump version) and telling them to take it as fact is just... not right, in my opinion.

agreed. in history we also learn about religions, but from a third-person perspective, as in "ancient egyptians did this" or "jews believe this" or "christians think this". we don't bring in politically affiliated religious textbooks and keep them in the classroom year-long. the only thing close to that that i can think of was my teacher bringing a copy of the quran when we were learning about islam last year, but thats different than keeping something on a classroom shelf for the ENTIRE YEAR. at that point, it symbolizes something much more than historic reference.

Because not everyone believes in Christianity, and putting religious content like that in schools is not fair to those kids who don't believe that. How would you feel if texts from other religions were placed on your school walls?

I don't think it's really fair to force religion onto people like that. Think about it, if you're Christian, and you believe in them, not seeing them at school isn't gonna make you stop having faith, correct? But I know a lot of non-Christian parents don't want their children going to schools where they feel religion is forced onto them. I personally am Christian and all, but I still don't think it would really be fair to the other religions. If we have the 10 commandments there, are we also gonna list all the other religions' beliefs?

You are not forcing Christianity down their throats if you merely hang the 10 commandments up on the school wall. If we hang an American flag on the school wall, are we forcing kids to love America? What if some students hate America?

If you give the kids the Bible to read as a school assignment, (I wish) then you might be "forcing" your religion on them but simply hanging up the laws that guided the Founding Fathers as they made the Declaration of Independence and other laws & documents is wrong?

I don't think it's necessarily "wrong," I just know a lot of people wouldn't appreciate it.

How so? I thought America was founded on religious freedom. The first settlers were people trying to escape religious persecution and be able to practice their religion how they wanted.

But what's the point of having the commandments up, other than making non-christian kids very uncomfortable (as with myself)? Do you think it's actually helping kids? It just feels like propaganda to me

it was, but does that mean we have to keep it today? back then, literally everyone (excluding slaves and indigenous people, since they were not considered a real part of civilization) was christian. now, that it not the case. so why should we support something simply because our country was founded christian?

don't think of it as forcing christianity, think of of it as creating a christian environment. if i (a non-christian) walked into my teacher's classroom and saw the ten commandments on the wall, i would feel isolated. i would feel like this was a christian classroom. but i'm not christian. try to put yourself in my shoes--- do you see my point?

when you see the ten commandments, is the first thing that comes to mind really the doi? of course, it was a major part of it, and we do learn about how religion influenced many things in the declaration, constitution, etc. in school, but again, try to put yourself in the shoes of somebody who is not christian.
