hey guys, so a little life has been on my tbr for some time now but im kind of anxious to start it because of the reputation it has got. if you had read this how traumatic would you say it is (without spoilers)?

I wasn't traumatised, but it definitely has some disturbing chapters + situations that are so central to the mc and why he is the way he is. My main problem with it was how it reads like torture p*rn, uses nearly every trigger warning so excessively to the point where readers get desensitised to the violence, and the authors lack of empathy and knowledge about these issues that she wanted to discuss in the book is just worrying. she doesn't even believe in therapy. it's that bad.

but it's got some really, really beautiful writing - I wouldn't say I recommend it, but if you'd like to read it, just be aware of the heavy content the book covers and brace yourself for how detailed it will be at times. You will need to pause, shut the book and collect yourself at times. But the writing, oh man. As many qualms as I have with Yanagihara, I have to admit - she can definitely write.
