˚₊‧⁀➷Chadlotte˚₊‧⁀➷ (MERRY CHRISTMAS) | 351 comments Ok so I'm homeschooled, and i don't know about Public schools but the program I'm doing talks about religions. Like Christianity, judaism, Buddhism, Islam, things like that. I personally don't care but what are your opinions?

Ella✨(booktrovert) | 605 comments I personally think that schools should educate students about all religions or at least an overview as long as they aren't forcing beliefs or violating the 1st amendment.

exactlyyy. we learn about religions in history, so when we're studying a region we also study the main religion there during that time period. in the case that it's a world religion, we go deeper into how it was founded, what are its core beliefs, etc. But it's all secular and informational, which I like.

That's a cool idea! Maybe there could be an overview that's part of the curriculum and if people want to know more there could be electives?

honestly public school is often very bland. lie if you have a teacher that just sticks to the curriculum, it's soooo boring and completely unhelpful. i can see why you were so shocked.

message 35: by Austin (new)

Austin I think you should teach the religion of your culture at the school in principle. But i think in practice there are just too few qualified people to speak on religion.

Religion is kinda like politics. You cant really be “objective.” And we are kidding ourselves if we think so.

I went to a public school and they intertwined history and religion and lightly tapped all religion. It got silly when we were talking about islam. I grew up during the war on terror so you could always turn on your TV and terrorists were doing something whacky all around the world. Our history teacher claimed islam advanced women's rights the day after some terrorist melted a womans face off with acid after she converted away from islam.

Livlyy ⭑.ᐟ | 83 comments Nahh , I don’t think so . If it has to be , then they have to make it optional bc everyone has different beliefs 🤷‍♀️ If you want to study your religion , you should be the one making effort and doing it by yourself

✰ g i g i - jisung season ✰ (jisqngzzno1) | 440 comments We should handle Islam properly, I (fortunately) learned about how awfully other schools teach about the big poppa monotheistic religions, and they are... not great. Especially in smaller, more conservative school districts

I never see public schools teaching Satanism, but they teach Christianity and Hinduism and Evolutionism. What happened to diversity and inclusion?

Whether you like it or not historically islam did advance women's rights. Women weren't allowed to inherit anything before islam

What someone does, does not make it religion.

YourLocalPoliticsPotato wrote: "I never see public schools teaching Satanism, but they teach Christianity and Hinduism and Evolutionism. What happened to diversity and inclusion?"

first of all, evolutionism isn't a religion. and secondly, hinduism and christianity are world religions. hundreds of millions/billions of people follow those religions, meaning a significant percentage of the human population. if i was determining a school curriculum dealing with religions, i would choose faiths that many, many people follow. since we don't have the time to learn about every single faith in the world, it is best to focus on the main ones.

Essentially, its much like advertising. If the guardian of a child chooses to expose their kids to a certain religion, they should be sent to private school. If a child is sent to public school, its for the minimum quality and learning. Private school is for specific quality and learning. Some parents aren't able to send their kids to private school, and the kids end up in public school. As an example, a non wealthy family is Muslim and cant send their children to any school of their own choice because of money. So their children are taught at public school. But this public school teaches Christianity, but the children can't choose not to learn this, because public school is their only source of education. So no, I don't think they should teach religion in public schools. However, it would be ok if schools taught the basics of several of the main religions, as long as they aren't teaching opinions on what is the superior religion, etc. basically the first amendment.
