Challenge Continued4. Asia: Kushiro Shitsugen National Park

The Kushiro Marshland in Hokkaido was designated as a national park in 1987 in order to preserve the country's largest wetland and marsh habitat, which supports the only known population of endangered Japanese cranes in Japan. This species of cranes was originally thought to be extinct due to overhunting and habitat destruction. However, in 1926 a group of about 20 birds was discovered in the marshes around Kushiro. With conservation efforts, they have since made a dramatic recovery and now number more than 1000 birds.

✱ Read a book where the characters try to save something (briefly share details) or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in MARSHLAND.
The park does not receive much snowfall, even in winter, so the cranes can be viewed year round, attracting many photographers. It's spectacular to watch as they dance, often in pairs, with seemingly choreographed dips and jumps. There are several observation sites, wooden promenades, and walking trails that allow for nature viewing, bird watching, and the opportunity to enjoy the unique environment the park offers. Another way to explore the park is by taking a canoe or kayak tour on Lake Toro or Kushiro River.

✱ Read a book with a PAIR of something on the cover (post cover) or read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter found in CRANE (share name).
For a different perspective of the park you can take a horseback tour on a Dosanko, a Japanese horse breed indigenous to Hokkaido. These horses are very tall but have gentle natures. If you are short on time, there are actually two train services that follow the Kushiro River through the marsh. They run the trains more slowly than normal services, enabling the passengers to appreciate the beautiful seasonal views the wetlands offer.

✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in KUSHIRO SHITSUGEN NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).
5. Africa: Ichkeul National Park

Ichkeul National Park presents a fascinating landscape and is one of the most important wetlands in the Mediterranean region. The vast body of water is the last trace of a chain of freshwater lakes that once stretched across North Africa. In 1980 the Tunisian lake and mountain of Ichkeul were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, converted into a national park, and named a Ramsar site and Biosphere Reserve. Its exceptional ecosystem makes it a perfect wintering ground for thousands of migratory birds. This makes the park a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, as they can witness the awe-inspiring sight of flocks of birds filling the sky.

✱Read a book with birds (plural) shown prominently on the cover (post cover) or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in NORTH AFRICA.
The park is best visited in late winter when the birds arrive and early spring when the wildflowers are in bloom. It's important to note that the park is actually closed during the summer due to extreme heat. Some of the park's highlights are seeing the popular pink flamingos and the semi-domesticated water buffalo of ancient origins that live in the marshes. For the historians out there, the area includes an old geological museum, and several sites with Roman remains, including a thermal hot spring that was used to heat hammams used since Roman times.

✱ Read a book that takes place mainly in winter or spring (tell us when) or read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter found in ROMAN (share name).
Exploring the park on foot is highly recommended, as it allows you to fully immerse yourself in its natural beauty. There are well-maintained walking trails that lead you through the various ecosystems, offering breathtaking views and opportunities to spot wildlife. To cover more ground but still be a part of the stunning scenery, rent a bicycle from one of the park’s designated rental stations. For those who prefer a guided experience, there are organized tours available led by knowledgeable guides who can provide valuable insights into the park’s flora, fauna, and history.

✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in ICHKEUL NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).

4 Months from Start
Let's take a look at five National Park Wetlands from around the world.
Wetlands cover just over 6% of the Earth's land surface. Sprinkled throughout every continent except Antarctica, they provide food, clean drinking water, and refuge for countless people and animals around the world. Despite their global significance, an estimated one-half of all wetlands on the planet have disappeared.
The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is an international treaty that provides the framework to protect wetlands and their resources. The convention was adopted in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran. All of the national parks below are part of the Ramsar treaty.

1. South America: Pantanal Matogrossense National Park
At more than 42 million acres and sprawling across Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, the Pantanal wetland is the largest in the world. But only 5% of this huge area is protected land. The other 95% is under private ownership. The Pantanal Matogrossense National Park was created in 1981 to help preserve this natural ecosystem, enabling scientific research, environmental education, and ecological tourism. In 2000, a larger area of the Pantanal was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site.
✱ Read a book with a large body of water on the cover (post cover) or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in WETLAND.
This massive wetland is home to over 2,000 different species of plants, 236 species of mammals, 463 species of birds, and 141 species of amphibians or reptiles. In fact, it has the largest concentration of crocodiles in the world, with their predators being both the ocelots and jaguars. The Pantanal is also home to the biggest parrot on the planet, the hyacinth macaw. Getting a glimpse of this abundant wildlife is what brings visitors to the park.
✱ Read a book with over 2,000 reviews on its GR Homepage (share number) or read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter found in JAGUAR (share name).
You are required to obtain a special license and secure a guide in order to visit this sought-after natural wonder. Tour options include river cruises, jeep safaris, horseback rides, birdwatching, and canoeing. The rainy season brings tumultuous rains that engulf all but 20% of the Pantanal floodplains underwater, so visiting during the dry season (July to October) is an absolute must.
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in PANTANAL MATOGROSSENSE NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).
2. North America: Everglades National Park
The Everglades in South Florida covers approximately 1.5 million acres, making it the third-largest national park in the contiguous US and the largest remaining subtropical wilderness. This enormous wetland, which is home to 9 distinct ecosystems, is fed by water from Lake Okeechobe. For hundreds of years, humans encroached on the Everglades, diverting water from the lake to cities, dramatically altering the ecosystem and wildlife populations. In 1947 it was named a National Park, making it the first one in the US specifically created to protect an ecosystem from destruction. Today it is also listed as a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve.
✱ Read a book with a 9 in its total page count (share page count) or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in FLORIDA.
The best time to visit this incredible park is between December and March, when temperatures and mosquito levels are lower. Mosquitoes are a serious issue, so be prepared! But they are not the only creatures you will see in the Everglades. The park is home to manatees, American alligators AND crocodiles (it's the only place in the world where both live together naturally), a huge number of bird species, and even panthers, though the likelihood of seeing one is very low. There are several roads throughout the park that connect many informative visitor centers and accessible trails, but you will only see a fraction of the park if you rely on these. You must get off the highway to truly experience the Everglades.
✱ Read a book with a road or reptile on its cover (post cover) or with an MC whose first name starts with a letter found in PANTHER (share name).
There are many options for getting up close and personal with this habitat. A guided Wet Walk takes you on a "slog" through a swampy and ethereal cypress forest. Or don a canoe or kayak and explore Nine Mile Pond or one of the many other bodies of water in the park. There are several available boat tours that will take you to areas you can't explore on foot or by car. But the most popular are definitely the airboats. These controversial vehicles are banned in several parts of the park, but a few companies are now operating in conjunction with the park service. The boat is propelled by a giant fan, and it is a thrilling experience to ride one and race through the wetlands.
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).
3. Europe: Danube-Auen National Park
Danube-Auen National Park preserves one of Central Europe’s last unspoiled natural wetlands. Located between Vienna, Austria, and Bratislava, Slovakia, this jewel was placed under international protection as a national park in 1996. The Danube is free-flowing here, and the interplay of rising and falling water creates a variety of habitats for plants and animals. Floodplain forests are developing into species-rich forest wilderness, helping the area return to its natural character.
✱ Read a book with forest-like trees on the cover (post cover) or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in FLOODPLAIN.
The national park visitor center in Orth Castle serves as a gateway to the Danube wetlands, inviting visitors to become more familiar with this fascinating landscape and its flora and fauna through its extensive multimedia exhibitions. The underwater observation stations are the heart of the castle island, providing unique views into the water where large numbers of domestic fish swim by the viewing windows. The castle island also has a playground where children can romp to their heart’s content as well as idyllic places for watching and relaxing.
✱ Read a book with the word CASTLE found in its text (share text) or read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter found in ORTH (share name).
The beauty of the Danube wetlands can be explored on guided tours with national park rangers that range from walking adventures to boat excursions. Or you can experience the area on your own by kayaking down the river or hitting one of the many available trails. Enjoy the lush flora, take in the deep smells of the river, and keep your eye out for the park's red deer, foxes, beavers, or wild boars. The white-tailed eagle and eagle owl are two of the coveted bird sightings. Unfortunately, camping is not allowed in the park, but there are numerous lodging choices nearby.
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in DANUBE-AUEN NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).
