"For humans predisposed to melancholy, demonic possession is a form of linguistic exile from the Word. Consequently, the melancholic who suffers from nostalgia and yet yearns for the absolute takes up the devil's get-rich-quick schemes all the more easily" (p.224). Like Faustus, who sells his soul to the devil.

I'm reading Andrew Hui's book The Study: The Inner Life of Renaissance Libraries and it's so fascinating! The first part was on bibliophilia and the second part is on bibliomania and how there's always a fine line between the two. Too little reading leads to ignorance, but too much reading can lead to madness (like Don Quixote).

How are you doing btw? :)

Hey!

Oh, you know... I still haven't gone to the doctor and I still want to be a teacher 😅

I read both St. Gregory's biography of St. Benedict and the Rule a few years ago :) The edition of the RB 1980 translation I had came with a wonderful scholarly introduction that discussed the early church's Divine Office and how there's was two traditions, i.e., the cathedral tradition and the monastic tradition. The former didn't concern itself with praying through all the psalms, but prayed them thematically, e.g., for Lauds, only praying morning themed psalms. Also, the cathedral tradition was very repetitive. In contrast, the monastic tradition emphasized praying through the entire psalter. As you know from the Rule, St. Benedict organizes the psalter so that all the psalms are prayed within one week :)

You know what would be fun? Comparing the first chapter of the Regula (on types of monks) with the later Mendicant tradition and seeing if you could reconcile the two, if there's even any contradiction between the two that is.

I decided to take a break from my German history readings btw. Right now, I want to focus on some Greek/ Roman primary sources, as well as some of my other history books on antiquity. 2025 will be the year when I finally discipline my reading/ approach it systematically.

What music have you been listening to lately? :) The othet night I was listening to the custom station Apple Music generates and the most gorgeous cover of Chasing Cars came on. I actually cried while listening to it 😅
