Ian | 3 comments I'm reading the witcher books right now and I read bo-young kim's on the origin of species and other stories earlier this year. I'm realizing that I haven't read that many books that were originally published outside the US and UK, and I want to change that. Any good recs?

Colin (colinalexander) | 384 comments Try Vagabonds by Hao Jingfang. This will give you a political and sociocultural fiction mostly set on Mars, with Mars-Earth conflict. Translation by Ken Liu.

The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa (one of my personal favorites)

The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu is translated. It’s not for everyone but I quite enjoyed the first one at least.

The Swarm by Frank Schatzing

QualityLand by Marc Uwe-Kling

If you are open to horror:
Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez
The Unworthy and Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica

I second Vita Nostra!

And I always recommend Momo, it's sometimes listed as a children's or middle grade book, but it's actually a book for all ages.

〰️Beth〰️ (x1f4a0bethx1f4a0) | 61 comments The People in the Photo by Hélène Gestern

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman (many of his books are popular)

Only One Life by Sara Blaedel (part of a detective series but the only one I have had the chance to read so far.)

Mating Birds by Lewis Nkosi but very depressing

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

And I’ll third Vita Nostra and the Memory Police

Michael B. Morgan | 169 comments Hey Ian, here are mine: The Second World War historical novel The Red Horse, by Eugenio Corti, a great chatolic Italian writer. The Three-Body Problem, and Storm of Steel by Ernst Jünger.

DivaDiane SM | 3701 comments And for some books from the SFFBC bookshelf:

Lonely Castle in the Mirror

and

The City of Dreaming Books

(sorry on the app, so no links)

I enjoyed both books quite a lot.

Inkheart blew me away

message 15: by Colin (new)

Colin (colinalexander) | 384 comments Definitely second Lonely Castle in the Mirror. I would not have thought of Stieg Larsson or Fredrik Bachman for SFF recommendations, but if you are looking outside of SFF, I would also recommend the works of those authors as mentioned above.

Solaris by Stanisław Lem

If one endeavors to read Solaris, I'd recommend the Bill Johnston translation over the earlier translation which was actually based on the French translation and not translated directly from Polish. Johnston is apparently an expert translator of Polish texts into English and this is the translation preferred by Lem's surviving family.

It's a hard reading?

DivaDiane SM | 3701 comments And Momo, by Michael Ende (German), is so wonderful. It may seem like it’s a kid’s book, but it totally works for adults as well.
