Karin | 9364 comments his is a beautifully written that defies one specific. There is a murder trial going on in the middle of a blizzard on a fictional island in Peuget Sound (where the author is/was from) set in 1954, but much of the novel goes back into the past, primarily the childhood and youth of Ishmael, a reporter, and Hatsue, the wife of the accused. However, we also see things from the lives of other characters in the book. Ishmael has been in love with Hatsue since they were children; she's Japanese American and he fought the Japanese in WW II. Her husband fought the Germans in the same war. There much more to this. The film, if you've seen it, captures the feel of the book and the essence of the story remarkably well, but there is much more to the book.

John Warner (jwarner6comcastnet) | 121 comments I read this book several years ago. It might be time to read it again. I thought the prose was poetic in its writing.

Robin P | 6067 comments Yes, it is historical fiction, romance and mystery all in one.

Joy D | 10503 comments I loved this book.

Booknblues | 12464 comments Truthfully, I have never read this and have had a beat up paperback copy around forever.
I just checked and it meets the 5 people tag for family drama, so August may be the time for it.

Jgrace | 4006 comments I agree with John. It may be time for a reread.

Algernon (Darth Anyan) | 614 comments I read it more than 20 years ago, and I still remember some of the plot, the characters and the way it was written. I wish I could say the same of some of the books I've read in the last couple of years that I might have liked in the moment but turned out to be quite forgettable.
I also remember being disappointed in the movie adaptation compared with the book.

Karin | 9364 comments This is the third time I've read it, but I can't remember when the first two times were. I think I first heard about it from my mother, who had good taste in books (but of course I didn't like everything she did, after all she owned all of the Steinbeck novels I didn't like, plus a few others.)

I liked the film, but didn't see it right after I read the book the first time. My mother told me she liked the film and she wasn't not one to like film adaptations that strayed too much, but of course it can't get all of it--that would take very a long mini-series.
