Lise Bréval (lisebreval) | 2 comments I find that historical romances often suffer from a lack of depth and plausibility. By contrast, I really like authors who root their love stories in a vivid historical context, where the characters evolve in harmony with the values, customs, and social realities of their time.
That’s the case, in my opinion, with Shōgun by James Clavell, North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, and Pachinko by Min Jin Lee.
On the other hand, I’m not too fond of novels that are overly scholarly, where erudition takes precedence over storytelling. I like to be drawn into a story; I need to feel attached to the characters—at least to the main one.
Do you have any recommendations for historical romances that fit these criteria?
