Here are two articles outlining what's going on:

Canada's top court said it's okay to cull the ostriches at universal ostrich farms. The government says the bird could still spread alvian flu to people or wild life, even if some survived. The farmers wanted to save them for research, but the courts agreed with the government, so the cull can go ahead.

Hazel (my girlfriend's version) | 251 comments I have very strong feelings about this, so I probably won’t be debating further.
I’m not surprised this has happened. Bird flu has been going on for a while now in lots of countries, and is now spreading to mammals and other animals. Millions of birds have been slaughtered as soon as they test positive, and yet it hasn’t seem to make much of a difference to bird flus spread. I understand why they were killed, I don’t believe it is in any way moral or ethical but I get it. At this point scientists really need to find a treatment or cure or prevention or SOMETHING because so many more birds and mammals are going to be infected very soon.

I agree this is wrong, I wish It could change but we have people out there not caring as long as it does not affect the rich is most part what I have heard.

guys did we "cull" every single person who tested positive for covid in 2020 and 2021? or did we adapt our hospitals and put resources into building a vaccine?

and before people come at me, yes ostriches matter as much as people, and even if they don't to you, let's see what happens when the avian flu starts spreading to other animals even faster than before and egg prices go up again. it's so naive to think that we live in a separate world from animals, quite literally everything is interconnected. their outbreaks will and do affect us. if you don't care about animals at least just support them because you know it'll affect you.

Exactly! Also they didn’t test positive for bird flu, multiple years ago they showed signs of it (I might be wrong but this is from what I’ve heard), and also they literally were doing research on them to help cure it

that's even worse, like i'm sorry but i'd say the research is more important 😭 you don't end diseases by killing everyone that has them, you end them by actually researching them and figuring out a genuine solution.

Ophelia ˚࿔ | 179 comments yeah exactly. they would never kill everyone with a certain disease, and animals matter just as much as humans

Exactly 😭 Like I never want to say anything that goes 'too far' because people ahve strong opinions on this kind of stuff but people are convinced humans are like way more worthy of life than animals but I just disagree tbh
