Happy Tuesday, and Happy Veterans Day! I think we had another mix-up with the prompt sched, so that's why I'm the one posting this today. Anyways, in relation to Veterans Day, this is our prompt:
"Write a story from the perspective of a soldier who is about to fight in their first battle during World War I. (WWI)"
Have fun, and happy writing!

I hope you like this. Here's mine, it's called "The Hidden Story at Somme":

DAY OF BATTLE

The sky is as bleak as our moods. It's hard to differentiate the gray clouds from the smoke of the guns and cannons used over the last few days.
I walk out of the small blue tent, my feet dragging on the ground. These boots are too heavy, the uniform too stiff and weighted. I feel as though I am walking through molasses.
Fellow soldiers nod their heads at me. I nod back. No one smiles. No one laughs. The Battle of the Somme has suffered over 100,00 casualties already, and those of us who are new know that our chances of coming back are slim.
I walk over towards the breakfast table, where most of the soldiers are gathered. No one eats, however. Our eyes are glazed over like we've already passed, and the atmosphere is tense. No one talks. We're too afraid.
The siren goes off. It's time. We all get up and shuffle to our tents to grab our packs and weapons. I open the flap to my shared tent and find my bunkmate, Cameron, grabbing his pack and smearing black and green paint on his dark face.
"Good luck out there, man." He says to me.
"You too, man. You too." I smack him on the back, and we head out.
When we get to the field, our General directs us where to go. We set up our weapons and get into position.
There's a sudden shift among the crowd of us, and the German soldiers come storming through our forces. I try and utilize the techniques I learned, but it's of no use. I'm overrun on all sides of me, and feel an impact like a punch to my rib. I've been shot, and I go down.

BLEEDING OUT

I wake up on a shaking cot, the hurried sounds of shouts and pounding boots all I can hear. Then there's a rushed female voice, "We need to get him to the infirmary now, or else he's going to bleed out. We also need to make sure there's no internal damage. Faster, ladies."

SURGERY

My eye is peeled open, and a light shines into my vision. "Soldier, if you can hear me, bite down on this strap of leather. This is going to hurt worse than being shot."
The nurse puts a small strap by my mouth, and I open up so that I can bite. Seconds later, blackness swirls around my vision as the nurses cut into my stomach to remove the bullet. Low screams escape my throat, but the strap stops me from fully yelling out. A nurse pushes on my rib, and my vision goes dark.

RECOVERY

I open my eyes in a dark room, and for a second I think I'm still swimming in that inky sea. But then a door cracks, and a young woman walks in. She's beautiful, with blonde hair tied back into a tight bun, her nurse's cap letting me know that she probably saved my life.
She walks closer to me and says, "Soldier, you arrived just in time for us to help you. The surgery was successful, and we got the bullet out. However, you did have a broken rib that needs to heal."
She has a small spatter of blood on her right cheekbone, and I reach up to wipe it off. She laughs and backs up. "You still might be a little loopy from the medicine. I'll come back when you feel better. Until then, if you need help, ring the bell to the right of your bed."
She gets up to walk from the room, but I catch her wrist. "Are you the one who saved me?" I ask, my voice a whisper.
She turns around and blinks at me for a second, a curious look crossing her face. And then she says, "I'm the head nurse. I brought you in and operated on you. So, yes, I technically did 'save' you. But you're saving all of us by fighting in this war. Thank you."
I nod. "I didn't get your name," I say, as a way of asking for it.
She smiles at me, and her tired eyes crinkle. "Nurse Holly Cross."
"My name is Nick," I tell her. "Nick Castello."
"Nice to meet you, Nick." She pats my hand and heads out of the room. I'd ring this bell a thousand times if it meant I'd get to see her walk through that door every time.
