Andy Goodman The novel brings together several people marked by war, including Shane returning from Vietnam, Medic preparing to travel to Auschwitz after helping free prisoners as a young Marine, and Mrs Abernathy speaking of Abe losing his soul at the Battle of the Bulge. Consider how these different wartime losses echo one another and how they influence the way each person thinks about justice, memory, and living on.
