The Tales of Einarinn series by Juliet E. McKenna

This is a decent, mid-tier fantasy adventure series, which is nothing to be ashamed of; many (most?) fantasy series I've read fall squarely into this category..This series absolutely worth reading, and I'd recommend to most fantasy readers; it's fast-paced and breezy, has an intersting story, reasonable world-building, and likable characters, but it (IMO) just lacks that "Special Something" that catapults it into the rarified top-tier of fantasy series.
I found the same with Irons in the Fire, which I think is set in the same world as Thief's Gamble. I enjoyed it, and the plot was quite engaging, but I never connected with the characters enough to go on and read the rest of the series.I keep thinking I should read more of McKenna's work, though. Dangerous Waters looks intriguing (again, I think it's set in the same world, just in a different time period or location). From the reviews I've read, McKenna keeps on writing consistently good books in a vast world, without ever getting the attention some of the 'big name' fantasy authors get.
Thanks for reminder on that Irons in the Fire; I'll have to remember to add it to my "To-read" list.
