Once of the perpetrators of the attacks against the Amish is a former member of the community. Where you surprised by this or by the identities of the others?

Yes, I think I was surprised that a former Amish young man would be involved in attacks on the community. But after thinking about it (with this question), I realize that people can turn on their own backgrounds violently if they perceive themselves as victims of some injustice.
Exactly. After thinking about it, I also realized that being shunned from your community can lead to very strong and perhaps even violent reactions.
I was surprised at first but as you point out, Charlene, those shunned might retaliate even more viciously out of hurt, shame and bitterness.
