Here is our schedule for upcoming reads as it currently stands:

April 19 - begin discussing Austen's short work Lady Susan
May 3 - tentatively begin reading one of the Stephanie Barron mysteries as a side read. Jeannette is determining interest and polling as to choosing the exact title within a separate thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...
May 10 - tentatively begin reading Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. I will be setting this up as a side read due to an interest in reading later fiction that may show reflections of Jane Austen, so to speak.

Look for discussion folders to be set up for each of these three discussions. Please join us in these interesting discussions!

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 226 comments SQUEE!!! North & South! I've wanted to read this one ever since I saw the miniseries. Now THAT one I shall mark and love over.

Now for me to dig around for the Stephanie Barron thread.

Tanja, glad you are excited! Look for Jeannette's beginning thread on the Barron read in the Group Reads/Side Reads Planning (I have renamed that folder).

Jamie (jaymers8413) This sounds great. I have been wanting to read North and South.

I was wondering if anyone has read any of Frances Burney's novels? I know Jane Austen was inspired by them.

Jamie, I have read Evelina and Cecilia, and loved them both. In my opinion, you can certainly see the influence that Frances Burney's writing had upon Austen too. I have also heard that Burney's Camilla is superb too. By the bye, if you're going to read some Elizabeth Gaskell, make sure you read Wives and Daughters, a simply brilliant Austen-esque novel. Happy reading! Cheers! Chris

Thanks! I have Evelina but have not read it yet. Cecilia and Camilla are on my to read list. I am glad you liked them! I have heard of Wives and Daughters and will add that to my to read list also.

Thanks you two, I am looking forward also!

Literary Multitudes (literary_multitudes) | 17 comments Oh, this is great. :)
As both "Lady Susan" and "North and South" coincide with our real life Jane Austen book club I hope to join into both discussions. :)
We just finished reading "Lady Susan" and will start reading "North and South" end of may.

Looking forward to it! :)

message 11: by Alicia (new)

Alicia I'm looking forward to discussing North and South with all of you. My in-person book club is reading it at the same time. I have been hungry to have someone to talk with about the book ever since I first read it a couple of years ago.

Cool! I think I have all most of the books listed so far! Just have to get North and South (I'm excited about that). I actually have book 4 of the Stephanie Barron book on a TBR, but I'ld be happy to join in the discussion on whichever number!

I'm taking suggestions for which book to read over on another thread:

Discuss Stephanie Barron

message 14: by Hope (new)

Hope (heyhopeful) Ooh cool, I really have been wanting to read North and South. :) Just about the best BBC mini-series ever!

message 15: by Hope (new)

Hope | 35 comments Me too, Hope:) I've really been wanting to read NOrth and South, I only recently watched the BBC version but I loved it!

Don't forget to pace yourself and drink plenty of fluids! :)

Shaun | 123 comments Ha ha! I know. It's crazy because there is so much I want to read and I'm a little too overzealous!

message 20: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorioz) I've just download the North and South miniseries and can't wait to watch it and read the book!

I've only watched the miniseries and it's one of the best I've seen recently, if not ever. Thornton. ♥

Hope you'll like it :)

The book is okay but the ending is extremely disappointing, I had to read it a few times and make sure I did not miss anything. This is the one time where the movie is better then the book in my opinion.

Now I'm intrigued. Is the book that different from the miniseries? I find it hard to believe anyone would have the guts to make such major changes. But then again, it depends on how not cinematic the ending in the book is.

Yes they had the "guts" and thank GOD!!! Trust me on this one. We have had extensive conversations on The Republic of Pemberley (pemberley.com) and pretty much everyone agrees that although the ending is not befitting the time period (people just did not kiss like that in public) we are so grateful that they took poetic liberty with it and made it very cinematic and gave us that piece of juiciness.

message 25: by Shea (new)

Shea | 117 comments Before this thread began I wondered why there was so much talk about "North and South" on this group. I was only familiar with the "North and South" written by Jakes and didn't know how the American Civil War would pertain to Jane Austen. Now that I have looked up Gaskell's "North and South" it makes SO much more sense. I have added Gaskell's novel to my to read list and look forward to discussing it with the group.

message 26: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) Excellent! Lady Susan is on the bookshelf and I ordered North and South from The Book Depository only the other day. I am really looking forward to the discussions.

Oh, sorry, Kim! The post at the beginning of this thread refers to LAST year's discussions!

Lisa Consiglio-Wolff (jrzgirl_1967) | 30 comments I have read North and South twice and never tire of it! It is right up there with my Jane Austen reads and my all time favorite classic Jane Eyre (minus the gothic of course).

I will prepare you like I am sure others have...the ending is blah. The writers of the mini-series nailed the ending much better!

Enjoy!

I recently read North and South with the victorians group and really enjoyed it, but I also thought ending was bit disappointing (or I better say, bit abrupt). I thought the ending of mini-series was lovely

message 30: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Consiglio-Wolff (jrzgirl_1967) | 30 comments Oh yes..the ending was quiet lovely! I think even Ms. Gaskell would have liked this ending much better!

Such a good read otherwise. :-)

message 31: by Kim (new)

Kim | 181 comments YES! The mini-series ending of North and South was so much better. I was so happy when Thornton stepped off the train and found her in the station. GAH. I think I need to go get my husband to watch it with me again!

message 32: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I have seen the movie, and am now reading the book, did not know the book was being discussed in May. At first, I got put off by Thornton in the movie, but was told by someone in the group to give it another look, and I enjoyed the movie. The book is so intriguing regarding Mrs. Thornton, Margaret, Her father, mother, brother, and all their intrigues. I enjoy reading Gaskell. I also read Wives and Daughters and liked that one also.

message 33: by Lynnm (new)

Lynnm Since I'm new to Goodreads, I'm not sure if you all have every read this particular book, but another good novel in the Jane Austen type genre is Frances Sheridan's the Memoir of Miss Sidney Bidulph. Obviously, not as good as an Austen novel, but reminds me a lot of Fanny Burney's books.
