Tressa (moanalisa) I notice many members here are listening to groups I've never heard of. Maybe it's my age but I just don't get into new stuff like I did 10+ years ago. The last "new" group I liked was The Killers and that's been a while.

How do you all keep up with what's new and good? I bought some Jack Johnson music when I kept hearing him on Pandora and liking his songs. But I just don't have the time or energy to keep on top of all the music genres.

Help! I feel so out of the loop.

message 2: by Sans (new)

Sans Typically, I scroll through the "other listeners also bought" sections on iTunes and Amazon. I also ask friends if they have anything new and amazing. One of those friends follows blogs from her favourite actors and bands. Several of them post their new musical finds.

message 3: by Jerrod (new)

Jerrod (liquidazrael) Most of the time it's through my buddies, we all like so much different stuff and all have different favorite genre's. My Aunt and Uncle just turned me on to Monte Montgomery.

message 4: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) Thanks, everyone. Eugenia, I'm SOL on the commercials and videos since I watch neither.

I used to read Rolling Stone decades ago but that mag is a former shadow of itself.

message 5: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) I used to love RS mag. Don't know what happened to it over the decades, though. Did you ever read that old music magazine called Crawdaddy? I think it was out in the '70s. You might be too young for it.

It is tough to get recommendations when I've taken myself out of so many loops. But that's why I'm over here!

message 6: by Ridley (new)

Ridley It's all Pandora for the most part for me. That and a local radio station that plays a lot of fun indie stuff.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Amazon, Internet and Satellite radio, tv shows/commercials, movies. "If you like" is very helpful to me.

message 8: by Carl (new)

Carl I. | 96 comments I find a lot of my new music through my contacts and through labels and the bands that send me material. I never rely on TV or radio. I also will spend a lot of time crawling through friends lists on My Space. If I know I like a band, I look to see who they are friends with and check out those bands. IMO there is probably more good music out there right now than there ever has been before.

message 9: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited Apr 09, 2010 06:16AM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I cannot listen to the regular radio. It gets on my nerves. They only play about 1% of the music being made, over and over again. And in my opinion, the worst 99% of the music being made. No offense to anyone. Just my opinion.

message 10: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) Danielle, that's why I don't listen to the radio. Plus, I can't stand to listen to DJs. I have never found one to be very funny. And I hate commercials and on radio three songs will play and then 5 mins. of commercials.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I agree, Tressa. The DJs are annoying and the commercials make me want to gouge my eyes out!

message 12: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) I'll turn on the radio to find out why there's a traffic jam on the interstate. There's so many commercials and so much yakking, I'm usually past the cause of the problem before they let me know what caused it. Annoying!

DJs are nothing more than adult Beavises and Buttheads.

message 13: by southpaw285 (new)

southpaw285 I read RS and Billboard magazines alot. I get alot of info from Amazon and iTunes. The "If You Like" feature is great, as well as the "Genius" feature on iTunes.

I think it is every Tuesday that new music is released here in the US, and I'm constantly checking different sites to see the latest releases.

I can't even listen to the radio anymore. It's always my iPod now...even in the car.

message 14: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay I find new soundtracks by watching movies of course! I listen carefully throughout the movie even though few others pay attention. If I'm interested I go home and google it and listen on youtube for hours.

message 15: by Gary (new)

Gary | 70 comments Over the last couple of years I seem to have fallen out of the loop with regards to new music, I used to read various music magazines and watch music channels but they all started to go very mainstream and I was finding very little to get excited about. Nowadays I mainly rely on friends to recommend anything good they come across, but I also always keep my ears open while watching movies and check out any bands I enjoy on the soundtrack.

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Two Words. Pandora Radio.

message 17: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Although some of it may not be recent, it's still new to you. By the way, I wouldn't recomend very much new music now. It has no meaning and no real drums. Thats the reason i like Paramore. Still releasing new albums, songs have meaning that aren't all about makeups and breakups, and hayley williams can actually do this awesome thing called singing.

I don't listen to a whole lot of new stuff, unless it's someone I already like and they put out a new cd. I tend to listen to cd's or my i-pod while in the car. If I forget i'll listen to 98.7 which plays mostly 80's stuff. One of the last (new) music I got was Joss Stone, and that was purely an accident. I was going somewhere after work, and I went to change the cd, and the radio was on a R&B station, and I heard the oddest interview between Joss & the Tom Joyner. Before I went home I stopped & bought her cd. And it is awesome. If someone recommends something I look it up on YouTube to see what it's about. Other then that I don't get new information about music.

message 19: by Dana * (new)

Dana * (queenofegypt) I use XM to hear new stuff, especially on Alt Nation, or i will look up bands I see listed on the new release blogs. Then I look them up on Amazon to hear samples. if I like, I try.

I heard a good one this morning by a fun band name "We Were Promised Jetpacks".

message 20: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Brewis (kbluvscats) Tressa,

I also use Pandora! It's a good tool to find new music. I also rely on iTunes recommendations and listening to the radio.

message 21: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesld) I use iTunes to listen to music samples and browse Amazon music.

I listen to Pandora but they repeat the songs so much

message 22: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) Hey, Kathy. Good to see you here. When I go to iTunes I always look at what's new and the most popular sales.

Oh, another thing I do is check out magazines' Top 100 best songs of the year/decade. It means I'm a little late discovering a band/singer, but it gives me some suggestions I wouldn't otherwise get.

Although, it was on one of these best-of-the-year lists that I found and bought! the insipid "Lip Gloss" song. OMG. Has anyone heard it? A frickin' teen rap song about lip gloss. An Ode to Lip Gloss! I bought it because I get a kick out of goofy rap, but that song was off the goofy meter.

message 23: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) The only rap I listen to is Pants on the Ground, just to make me smile every now and then.

message 24: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) My iTunes Genius is soo cliche. Just beucause Cherry Bomb is in my library, I don't want to hear Bikini Kill efffing me out every two seconds. No offense to anyone who likes Bikini Kill here, they're just not my thing

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I use last.fm. Searching through people's profiles, groups and similar artists to the ones I already like works fine for me.

message 26: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I know you don't have to, but still. It's kinda cliche.

message 27: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) I wish that man would record "Pants on the Ground." I couldn't stop laughing that night I saw it.

I do that alot too, Jo. Love Amazon.

for-much-deliberation ... (formuchdeliberationreads) In Trinidad we get "The Rick Dees Show" so when I get a chance I'll listen and take note of tunes I like then I'll either buy the cds or maybe download. Most of our radio stations are focused on the local/cultural music so if you like alternative, rock, metal your choices are either the one station devoted to such, some mall based music stores for metal heads and the like or the good old world wide web.

message 30: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) Rick Dees? He who sang "Disco Duck"? I didn't even know he was still alive.

for-much-deliberation ... (formuchdeliberationreads) Yes, Mr Disco Duck, he still hosts the Rick Dees Show. It airs on Saturdays here, I particularly enjoy the year end countdown.

I love Alt Nation, Dana.

Those recommendations get me in trouble. But I found one of my favorite bands, Edison Glass, that way.

I don't look at any recommendations from i-tunes, because it is a computer generated. I want a real person to tell me about something I might like.
