Ross (rossscann) I have read most of P.D. James and I am seeking works of similar style and quality. What do you recommend

Ruth Rendell comes to mind, who also writes as Barbara Vine.

Anybody else have suggestions?

How about the Richard Jury series by Martha Grimes and the Thomas Lynley series by Elizabeth George.

If it doesn't have to be British, I would also recommend the Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee series by Tony Hillerman. This series inspired my trip to New Mexico.

Lobstergirl I second the Elizabeth George recommendation. In my opinion James's and George's strengths, more than their writing, is the detectives they created. Dalgliesh and Lynley are both aloof but very likeable nonetheless. Intelligent and compassionate. And George does an excellent job pairing Lynley with Havers and having their aristocratic vs. working class roots play off each other.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10060 comments Deborah Crombie has a good series with detectives Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James.
