Amy Saunders (amydsaunders) | 3 comments Hi! I'm new here and was thrilled to find this group. I'm on the hunt for quality ebook cover designers/illustrators. I've done a little research but haven't found much yet. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Amy

Guido Henkel (guidohenkel) | 130 comments What exactly are you looking for? There are many different styles of covers, each requiring different skills. It depends to a large degree on the genre and topic of your books.

Let me know more and I might be able to help.

message 3: by Amy (new)

Amy Saunders (amydsaunders) | 3 comments Thank you for responding! My book is a mystery aimed at women around the ages of 25-35. I'd prefer illustrations over photographs. I think I'd like the illustrations to be abstract.

Let me know if you need more detail! Thanks again!

Amy

message 4: by Guido (new)

Guido Henkel (guidohenkel) | 130 comments Okay, in that case you'll need an illustrator. I would have been able to help with a general graphic designer but not an illustrator, necessarily.

Have you tried sites like eLance.com to find an artist?

message 5: by Amy (new)

Amy Saunders (amydsaunders) | 3 comments Thanks for that suggestion! I hadn't thought of eLance. I'll definitely look there. :) Thanks!

message 9: by Marjorie (new)

Marjorie Friday Baldwin (marjoriefbaldwin) | 13 comments Amy,

Did you ever find an illustrator for your book cover? I see a couple of illustrators self-promo'd themselves to you here and I'm NOT an illustrator but I'd like to suggest a couple I know of in the Indie Book community. If you want "cartoon" style illustrations, Rachel of the hugely-popular and highly-trafficked Book Blog, Parajunkee, does web site design and graphics theming for all your social media needs. She also does book covers but doesn't advertise that much because it's way more time-consuming and not her first love. She still has a 3-month waiting list ;-) Most of her illustrations would be appropriate for a RomCom or snappy/sassy kind of a book but she CAN do other things.

She has two totally separate sites for her two separate activities but it's really a single domain name with two different endings (.com for the book blogging business, .net for her design business)

Rachel's Book Review Blog

Rachel's Design Blog / Book Covers

I don't know if she could do a serious design for something like a Coffee Table Photography Book, which is what your very brief description sounds like, but she's pretty good at cartooning in totally different moods for different people. Her personal favorite is paranormal genre; that's not all she can do.

Mirti Venyon | 2 comments Nowadays there are numerous options for ebook covers! If you don't want to do it yourself (and boy are there many software packages for that purpose on the internet!), there are several affordable options. I had my covers done with Melody Simmons. She has ready-made covers and will do a custom design too.

I have hundreds of happy customers and great testimonials to reassure you. If you’re interested in some cover artwork for your book, or indeed any other project you may have, please consider me! Try Joel Friedlander. You can google him. He has a design company. He also offers a free download of his excellent guide "10 Things You Need to Know About Self-publishing". This guide also gives you links to other very informative websites. Without this guide, I would still be 100% ignorant about the business. -- I chose to hire a digital marketing specialist ($999.--up) For the flat rate of $999.-- 5 book cover designs are included. If I should not like any of these, I will hire Joel Friedlander. I think he is excellent in whatever he is doing and getting all this info from him, I think I owe him.

Richard Wendt | 1 comments Lot's of other illustrators/designers appear to be contributing to this discussion, so I may as well throw my hat into the ring too!
I am an Illustrator/Designer/Tutor with many years experience. I have just finished my first ebook cover and am looking to expand on that further. Within my design I tend to use 'graphic illustration' as opposed to stock photo's.

H.E. Fairbanks (hefairbanks) | 5 comments I do my own illustration using ProCreate on iPad. The program allows you to use multiple layers, so you can import a photograph or several photos on the bottom layer(s), erase what you don't want, and build on top using simple tools and spectacular colors. If you want to change something, you only need to change one layer, not the whole piece. The one thing I can't do is the graphics, so I outsource for that. It's much cheaper than the whole works.

message 26: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Taylor | 2 comments I'm a bestselling indie author, and I can't emphasise enough, the importance of a good cover.

I started out using the $5 type do it yourself templates, and had limited success. Then I hired www.idobookcovers.com. Simon listened to my brief, understood the market and designed me an amazing cover for my series. The best thing was, he totally understood ebooks - how to make a cover look great even on a teeny Amazon thumbnail.

Overnight - literally overnight - my sales went through the roof. After I uploaded my professional cover, my US sales went from 1000 a month to 30,000 a month. My UK sales, which had been non existent, (200 or so) went to 3000 a month, and have carried on growing.

My cover cost me $500 and it was cheap at the price. My advice to other authors, is once you've spent the time on your content, don't fall at the last hurdle and skimp on the cover. It is the first thing readers see, and they do judge you by it!

JS, Praise the Lord! Somebody finally got it! This is my forte as a publisher and designer. My covers have been featured on the Today Show, NBC, etc. My latest cover is here: http://www.CLEWbook.com and I am working with Good Reads to bring all the titles in my house to you our fans.

message 47: by Alison (new)

Alison Simmons | 1 comments I'd suggest you look at LOTS of websites. Google "e-book covers" and you'll have plenty from which to choose. Look at all the designs you can. Usually, an artist has a certain "style" like the individual whose comment is directly above mine. I can look at ten sites and know which ones I don't like or which ones won't suit the book I'm working on. So peruse the sites for a long time first and then try to find a few whose book covers speak to you or make an impression on you. A book cover is like art....so it's completely acceptable to be choosy and to have a say in what you think would best reflect the book's plot but also create a sense of curiosity to the potential reader.
