Cheryl Kaye Tardif engaged in a fascinating discussion about piracy with J A Konrath which led me to Cheryl's blog site.

Comment here, if you like. Duplicate your comments on Cheryl's blog (It's always so lonely to write a blog post and no one comments!).

I like to keep my list of piracy discussions here, where I can always find them.

I'm so glad you shared this. And I hope everyone here finds my posts helpful.

As an update to my piracy battle, the pirated works were deleted from 4shared after I sent about 3 emails. The member's account was also suspended, or so they say. I didn't check, but I did look for my works. They were gone.

Does this solve the problem? No. But I took a stand and won. For now. And it was worth it.

Since this battle, I've received emails from many authors--some small and some big. I even heard back from an agent for a well-known bestselling author who was very unhappy to see her client's works on 4shared.

Cheryl Kaye Tardif,
author of The River

Welcome, Cheryl.

If you write another piece, please be sure to share the URL here. Also, do please invite some of your author friends and readers to join the discussion here.

Kudos to you for putting your name out there in public in the debate.

If you haven't joined the private yahoogroups AuthorsAgainstCopyrightTheft and also AuthorsAgainstEbookTheft, you ought to do so for tips on other pirate sites (there are scores of them).

Ilovetoread | 51 comments Cheryl I look forward to reading your blog. As a reader I wish there was more I could do to help prevent e-book piracy. I applaud authors like Rowena and the others here who are taking a stand. It would be a good idea to check 4shared again. Maybe the person who posted your work was a repeat offender and permanently banned. I hope so.

4shared has a wiki with there site rules and how to use various features. This link is to the section on their policy. It basically says that if a member gets a notification of service abuse they need to remove the files that they are contacted about. Accounts that are created to distrubite pornographic or illegal matterial will be banned and to become unbanned delete the file from the abuse folder and notify 4shared. So basically the offenders just remove a file that has been reported and continue on distributing someone elses copyrighted material.

Hi, Ilovetoread,

Authors who take the time to send "Take Down Notices" are usually satisfied if a link to a book is severed.

EBay has occasionally removed members who repeatedly try to sell copyrighted works that they do not own (ebooks and ebooks burned onto CDs). Most of the hosting sites aren't as proactive.

Probably, they have no idea that authors compare notes!
Everyone compares notes!!!

LOL.
