Carol Cork *Young at Heart Oldie* (httpsrakesandrascalswordpresscom) Are there any 60s music fans out there?

I am biased because that was the music I grew up with but I do think there was so much talent during the 60s and such a variety of music.

Do you have any favourite Groups/singers and what do you love about this period?

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) The Beach Boys
The Beatles
Roy Orbison
Buddy Holly
The Drifters
The Mamas & the Papas
The Monkees
The Supremes
Aretha Franklin
Bee Gees
Elvis Presley

Some great names there. I was never a fan of Buddy Holly but loved the Everly Brothers especially "Cathy's Clown". I often listen to Beatles, Beach Boys,Bee Gees and Elvis, of course when I'm ironing as it makes it less of a chore. I remember the TV series the Monkees did in the 60s.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) I wasn't a big fan of Buddy Holly but felt he needed to be on the list anyway :)

I forgot The Everly Brothers? Shame Shame On Me!

My 60's music was a little different from you two.

Elvis ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jeannie C. Riley
Righteous Brothers ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tammy Wynette
Patsy Cline ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Buck Owens
Merle Haggard ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Conway Twitty
Johnny Cash ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Willie Nelson
George Jones ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jerry Lee Lewis
Marty Robbins ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Charley Pride
Brenda Lee ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Porter Wagner
Roy Clark ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger Miller
The Statler Brothers ~~~~~~~~~~ Jeannie Seely

We did have the occasional MoTown from time to time, but i'd say 83 percent country in the 60's.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) I actually listened to a lot of country back then. That's all my mom listened to. There are some definite goodies on your list, Lori. I loved most of them.

Thanks Pamela, that's all my dad listened to. All he still listens to, besides country gospel.

Hi Carol, I just love all the artistes that Pamela and Lori listed!!!
Actually I was listening to some Righteous Brothers just a couple days ago.......

message 9: by Gary (new)

Gary | 70 comments Yes the 60's, infectious pop melodies from The Beatles, Love and The Beach Boys. Wild innovation unrivaled to this day from the likes of Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix. The singer songwriters of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Neil Young. The decade rock n roll evolved from Elvis to the Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin. Then all that hot jazz with Charles Mingus, Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

Definitely my favorite decade for music producing about 90% of my most loved artists.

a few more just off the top of my head -

Jefferson Airplane~~~~~~~~~~~~Captain Beefheart
Pink Floyd~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Dusty Springfield
David Bowie~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Country Joe & the Fish
Janis Joplin~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The Doors
The Yardbirds~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The MC5

Yes, there were so many British groups at that time. Here are just a few I particularly remember:

The Kinks
The Animals
Gerry and the Pacemakers
The Rolling Stones
The Who
The Dave Clark Five
Manfred Mann
The Moody Blues
Procul Harum
The Hollies

and many many more

message 13: by Jena (new)

Jena (outlanderfan74) I love EVERYTHING about music of the 60's. From its innocent beginnings in doo wop, through surf, girl groups, hard rock, folk, Motown, all the way to psychedelia, I love it all. Some of my favorites though are The Shangri-las, Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, The Beach Boys, Smokey Robinson, Jimi Hendrix, Sam Cooke, The Doors, and Wendy & Bonnie (an incredibly talented but hardly known set of teenage sisters who made a beautiful soft psychedelic album).

message 14: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Jefferson Airplane
Janis Joplin
The Beatles
Cream
The Doors
The Who
The Knks
The Rolling Stones
Much Much more.

A man after my own heart. This is the music I grew up with, the music that inspired me to play. Throw in a little early 70s - Black Sabbath, Mott the Hoople, Humble Pie, Alice Cooper and I'm in heaven

Carol Cork *Young at Heart Oldie* (httpsrakesandrascalswordpresscom) I grew up with the 60s music as well and it still sounds as fresh today as it did then.

No offense but folk music is right up there with hard core rap, bluegrass, and nails on a chalkboard. To this day i wonder how in the hell Bob Dylan made any money at all. *** shaking my head ***

message 22: by Pamela(AllHoney) (last edited Aug 29, 2010 04:48PM) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) I must be a hick then. I like Bob Dylan and some folk music :) but I like a lot of genres but not disco, hard rock and rap and the nails on the chalkboard

message 23: by Marco (new)

Marco (marcoreads) | 131 comments i like yoko ono, when she was with john lennon, her early stuff

message 24: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) I liked some Dylan but early on his voice grated on my nerves.
Marco mentioned (not Bonnie from Delaney) but but Bonnie and Delaney & Friends including Clapton put out some pretty good stuff.

message 25: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) How about John Mayall and his ensemble of guest artists?

message 26: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) | 513 comments Mod
I don't think Folk music makes you a Hick Pamela(AllHoney). Now Bluegrass might. I like Disco, Hard Rock, and some Rap, but that doesn't make me a weirdo.

message 27: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) You got me on a soap box now.
I miss LP's. Spending an hour in a RECORD store looking at album art. checking out who plays on tracks. ( look here's Ginger Baker playing with so and so or here's Keith Richards playing lead on this track etc.)
The Cheap Thrills album with art by R. Crumb.
Those were the days my friend.

message 28: by Gary (new)

Gary | 70 comments Yes the Cheap Thrills album cover, prior to seeing that Janis Joplin was just a name to me. You can't not listen to an album that looks that cool.

message 29: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) You are right . Was it the Sticky Fingers album that had the zipper?

message 30: by Gary (new)

Gary | 70 comments I think so, I know it was a stones album but can't remember which.

message 31: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) the Stones album that mimicked Sgt. Peppers (featuring Sympathy for the Devil) that had the holographic? cover
changed when u flipped it.

message 32: by Gary (new)

message 34: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) and every song on that album is a classic.
esp. Turtle Blues and Ball and Chain

message 35: by Gary (new)

Gary | 70 comments If I can convince anybody to check out one of the most undermentioned masterpieces of the 60's then it was worth it.

message 36: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) gary, u r a young guy how do u know this stuff

message 37: by Gary (new)

Gary | 70 comments I used to just listen to heavy metal all the time which made me develop an appreciation for people who could actually play. Then I got a job in a music shop where we could play almost anything we liked as long as it wasn't heavy metal or hip hop. Most of my work colleagues just listened to rubbish so I had to discover something I liked before work drove me crazy, then I discovered Led Zeppelin which opened the door to a hole different era of music for me, and the rest as they say is history.

message 38: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) sounds like the journey my son took (early 30's) in his teens he picked up Doors, Zeppelin and Clapton with no prodding from myself.

message 39: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) Seems like you guys in the UK have a better appreciation for music ( people that can really play their instrument
) and are interested in advancing musically than anywhere else.
check out some of Rob's comments

Hmm, I wish that were true. When I was a kid there was a tv show called Stars in Their Eyes where people did kareoke covers of famous songs, it was all just a bit of fun until they changed the name to x factor and started handing out recording contracts. For some reason the majority over here now seem to think that thats what music is.

message 41: by Charles (new)

Charles T (charlest) | 149 comments We used to take office wall clocks and cut out the album cover to fit inside the clock frame. I had an AWESOME Demons and Wizards clock!!!

Going to the record stores was the ultimate experience, browsing through the cutout bins for fifty-cent or a dollar treasures - Toe Fat, Pearls Before Swine, Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes - you never knew what you'd find.

Sticky Fingers had the zipper. Some Girls had photos of Lucille Ball and a couple of other famous actresses. They sued and the cover had to be re-done for subsequent pressings.

Frank Zappa and the Mothers also did their own Sgt Peppers. It was called We're Only In It For The Money and mimicked the Sgt Pepper cover.

message 43: by Gary (new)

Gary | 70 comments Unfortunately my copy of We're Only In It For The Money is a remaster from when the whole Zappa catalogue was released on Ryko, so the cover is just frank and a coupe of members of the mothers wearing dresses. It does have the original cover on the inlay sleeve as a poster but I don't want to destroy the sleeve for a poster on my wall.

Going to Peaches and scrolling though the wooden crates of albums was always a thrill. Like you said cwt1954, you never knew what you might find. Todays record shops don't deserve to be called record shops. Do they still go by that name? I haven't been to one in a long time. Never leave the house order on line pretty much whatever you want. Hell i'd bet you could even get a "woman or man of the night" from the www.find a whore! What do you think?

message 45: by Gary (new)

Gary | 70 comments I used to love browsing Music shops and would often buy things I'd never heard of because of intriguing covers and it was always exciting to find things you didn't expect. I love the internet for buying music as I can always find everything I want with very little effort but miss the thrill of rummaging through baskets searching for gems, I also no longer buy anything I don't know which has vastly reduced the number of new bands I discover as I'm not a chronic downloader.

message 46: by Charles (new)

Charles T (charlest) | 149 comments I just re-purchased one of my favorite albums growing up, although I think it came out in 1970. Long John Baldry's It Ain't Easy has finally been released on cd after being out of print for decades. Rod Stewart and Elton John produced, Ronnie Wood on guitar, Elton John on piano, Maggie Bell and Leslie Duncan on backing vocals. This one is a desert island album for sure.

message 47: by Gary (new)

Gary | 70 comments I used to hate Rod Stewart until I heard Truth by Jeff Beck, now I can't help but like the guy. I guess I just pigeonholed him for all the rubbish he put out, though I always kind of liked The Small Faces.

I just noticed Lori used 'Peaches' 3 words into her first sentence after a discussion involving Frank Zappa.... Coincidence or a closet Zappa fan? Got to love the mighty Peaches En Regalia, often referred to as just Peaches.

message 48: by Charles (new)

Charles T (charlest) | 149 comments I hate Rod Stewart's music once he stopped performing with the Faces, but I'm also not a fan of Alice Cooper after the original band broke up.

Do ya think I'm sexy my A**...

The two BEST Rod/Faces songs, IMHO - Stay With Me & Every Picture Tells a Story.

Lori, are you a closet Zappa fan? Time to come out of the closet, young lady...

message 49: by Charles (new)

Charles T (charlest) | 149 comments Now that I look at her comment, I think she was talking about a record store.

message 50: by Michael (new)

Michael (mikedecshop) we had a Peaches record store hear in New Orleans.
