I just wanted to make some final comments on Post Captain. The last portion of the book takes on a more enjoyable plot turn which is nice after going through so much with our Captain Jack. He has a little more success and seems to be heading up the ladder for the next installments of the series.
I loved the idea of the exotic animals on board and the beehive too!
And I think Jack, Stephen, and ourselves deserve this ending -- after the capture of the Spanish Fama, they share a meal with her captain --
"and as the courses followed one another their perfect dignity relaxed into something far more human. The bottles came and went: the tension wore away and away -- talk flowed free in Spanish, English and a sort of French." And then they have their toast. Nice.

Yes, except we are left not knowing whether or not Jack actually gets his prize money; we have certainly seen how he has been short changed in the past!
I kept thinking about that too, Joy -- worrying over if he got a new agent or not, until they mentioned it. I want Jack to have his money! Even though he is free-flowing with it, he didn't deserve to be swindled!

I hope you all will consider adding another episode of Aubrey/Maturin into your TBR piles periodically. It really is a marvelous series, and one well worth reading. I can honestly say too, that it only gets better and better! Cheers! Chris
I agree with the caveat of 'The True Love' [#15:]. I found this one so appalling I can't bring myself to reread it. On the other hand the series 'ends' [unless you count the posthumous vol:] on such a positive, exciting and forward looking note it is the icing on the cake. I would love but also dread for the family to look for another to continue the series, could be wonderful, but look what happened to James Bond.

I've stayed at this house many times and the book hasn't been here before and there are no other books from the series, just the third one. Strange, indeed!

I wish I would have thought to create the missing discussion threads myself, so that I could have contributed more thoughtfully when the material was fresh in my mind. Now, the story-lines are all jumbled up in my head :)

Surprise is not only an excellent volume, but a dear sweet-sailing little ship! I hope you and hubby are having a wonderful relaxing time up in the piney woods!
Christopher, do the have the book The Frigate Surprise by Brian Lavery & Geoff Hunt? I came across it in the Daedalus Books catalog recently and thought of you.It sounds beautiful with documents, photographs and "35 stunning paintings" by series illlustrator Geoff Hunt. $12.95 sounds like a bargain!

It looks great though! Geoff Hunt's illustrations are just the best, and are a lovely part of the whole experience of reading each of the O'Brian novels. Thanks for reminding me of yet another book that I do need to have for my library! ;-) Cheers! Chris
