Genre: Historical Fiction

A week went by before an opportunity arose for one of us to get past the gate and near the town Of Sarvar. Carriages filled with bridal gifts from Count Nadasdy began to arrive, among the items sent were Italian fabrics for Elizabeth to use for new gowns. She complained to the seamstress the ribbon was inadequate and not up to the latest fashion. Fortunately, all the servants were busy helping in the gardens or restoring additional rooms in the castle. The seamstress was distressed by Elizabeth's orders, but desperately wanted to accommodate the future countess. Seeing an opportunity to escape the castel walls, I offered to ride into town and retrieve the ribbon. A note was written to how much should be bought and permission for me to purchase on behalf of the Countess. Before I set out on my errand, I went to Elizabeth's private closet and found her travel trunk stowed near the back. I felt around in the hidden compartment probing for the edge of her letters. I snatched the bundle, taking care to conceal them in my pocket.

I rode out past the gates toward Sarvar, but instead of veering right, I cut back to the left and headed up hill to the Bende estate. Hearing my horses' hooves beating hard against the drive, the Bende's stable boy came out from the barn to greet me. I tossed him the reins to secure the horse as I jumped off.

"May I help you, Milady?" he asked.

"I have a message for Laszlo Bende. It is of an urgent matter. Could you please announce Lady Amara, " I said, winded from my vigorous ride.

"You say it is an urgent matter? I'm sorry Lady Amara; I regret to tell you Captain Bende is not at home."
