Alia dreamed of being free from the Capitol, not having to do whatever they wanted. It was one of her favorite dreams, but her dream was shattered as a knock came heavily on her door. She sat up, stretching. The knock came again. "Coming," she called. She stood up, her hair seeming to be perfect, and opened the door, only to see two Peacekeepers. "Oh, hello," she said sleepily. They said nothing, which made Alia feel uncomfortable. "Can I help you?" she asked, her eyes searching for an answer. They simply grabbed her by her arms and half pulled, half carried her to the Justice Building. "Hey!" she protested, to no avail.
Alex watched the girl being dragged away and wondered what she'd done to offend the Peacekeepers, or, more likely, the Capitol.
The Peacekeepers set her down on the steps of the Justice Building."Are you sure she's the right one?" one of the Peacekeepers asked the other.
"Not at all, but what difference does it make?" he responded.
Alia panicked. What were they going to do to her?
Alex crept closer, silently. He knew he wasn't going to get caught. Alex Green never got caught. But man, had this girl gotten caught.
"Excuse me, but what did I do?" Alia asked, her eyes full of worry. The Peacekeepers ignored her, discussing things quietly.
He hoped they wouldn't hurt her. If they did, he'd feel guilty for not stopping them. However, if he did try to stop them, they'd hurt him too. It was best just to leave now. But Alex just couldn't tear his eyes away from the spectacle. Probably because that's the only interesting thing going on around here he thought to himself bitterly. Besides the yearly Hunger Games, nothing remotely entertaining ever seemed to happen in District 9.
Alia sat, fuming. For once, she hadn't done a thing. And now she gets punished for it. Oh joy.The Peacekeepers kept discussing something, pointing to Alia and then returning to their hushed whispers.
Frustrated, Alia tried again. "What did I do?"
One of the Peacekeepers picked her up again, but only by her arm. She winced, not enjoying being pushed around.
"I didn't tell you to ask anything, now did I?"
Alia merely shook her head.
"Then stay quiet."
Fearful, Alia kept quiet, wishing she knew what she did.
Alex watched, totally silent, feeling sorry for the girl, even though he didn't know her name. She was almost certainly doomed.
Alia tried to listen to their conversation, but only heard: 'public beating'. Her eyes widened, and fear ate up at her. She was going to be punished, and it wasn't going to be pretty.
He strained to hear, wanting to know what she'd done, and what she was getting for it. Why was he so curious? It wasn't like he knew her or anything...
"Let's just punish her next time," the taller of the two Peacekeepers told the other. "She can't do any worse.""No. She should be punished now. You know what we're told to do. Just do it," the shorter of the two said.
The taller one sighed. "It's not really accurate; she doesn't even know what she did."
"She could be faking," the other one countered.
The taller one rolled his eyes. "She's a young girl; let her go."
After much disagreement, the taller Peacekeeper announced: "You are free to go."
Quickly, Alia pulled her arm free from the shorter Peacekeeper and hurried off, shaking slightly.
Nearly stumbling over her feet, Alia quickened her pace, trying to get as much distance from the Justice Building as possible.
Max saw Alia and quickly hurried after her
"Alia!"Max called runnimg faster.
(Can they have been friends for life?)
(Can they have been friends for life?)
"Yea hey whata wrong?"Max asked catching up.
Holding her tears back, Alia told Max: "Peacekeepers came to my door and took me to the Justice Building. They wanted to publicly punish me for something. I don't even know what I did." She tried to keep herself from crying, but the realization of what they could have done scared her. She nearly broke down, but managed to hold her tears back.
"Shh go ahead and cry"Max whispeared hufging her tightly.
"Ok then at least take a deep breath"Max said letting go.
"I will. Because for the next time the Capitol asks for a tribute, I'm volunteering."((back for a moment!))
(Ok)
"No don't!"Max said quickly
"No don't!"Max said quickly
"Ok then I will do it with you!"Max said
"No, you won't, Max. I won't let you," Alia said. "You can't do it with me, because then I'd have to kill you." Her face turned grim.
"Well I can't let you die!"Max said
Alia scowled. "Fine then. Enjoy yourself," she said, frustrated. She turned on her heel and stalked off.
Max ran after grabbing her arm.
"Just to walk"Max said letting go
"Thank you!"he said as they walked
"Max, I just..." she trialed off. "I need to do this, but you can't go with me. I need you to stay here."
"Why? If we go we can try to get people to fight back!"Max said
"And what about me? I can't know if your safe.umnless I come!"Max said
"How can I protect you!? We can work together!"Max pleaded
"I'm not a dog! I can't stnd not helping! Don't you get it! If we can confince other people to fight together we canend this!"Max said
