I'm in the middle of reading "Coraline" right now, just about to start Chapter 6. I'm enjoying the creepiness and the twisted artwork----but is anyone else feeling like some of the ideas aren't really all that original? The talking black cat reminds me an awful lot of the Chesire Cat in "Alice".

Well the cat and the other world would be more Alice and Wonderland... speaking of is anyone following the new Alice and Wonderland movie by Tim Burton? Johny Depp is going to be the Mad Hatter in it!
I think Gaiman purposely patterned Coraline after Alice in Wonderland. Think of it as a more modern makeover.
Thanks, J-Lynn. Yes, once I began thinking of the story as a dark and twisted retelling of "Alice" instead of a "knock-off", the whole story changed for me and I think it's fantastic. I don't know why the fact that it was on purpose didn't seem more obvious to me at first. (And, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter?? Genius!)
I am really excited to see the Alice in Wonderland movie. I guess supposedly this was the first movie Tim Burton ever wanted to do. I am glad he waited though because now graphics in movies are so much better.
