Has anyone ever read this edition of the book. It's a great story but, the footnotes are driving me a bit crazy. All right people might not know Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, or Bette Davis - poor people. But, I really don't have to be told that Hollywood is where movies are made, that Trumen and Hoover were presidents, or that the FBI solves crimes.

Its funny that you mention it, because although there are footnotes that are obvious, as mentioned above, and a waste to reference in the middle of reading, there are others that I appreciated for putting the story into generational context. I also appreciated notations that referred back to Steinbecks' other writings.
Thanks for answering. I also do like and have found footnotes to be helpful especially when reading literature from a different time period or country and what the author knows I might not. But, this was crazy. I kept looking at the footnotes thinking he was going to tell me something important and got Herbert Hoover United States president.
