Tips for Self Promotion, Sales, and Advertising discussion

Has anyone ever tried a direct e-mailing service and if so has it resulted in greater sales? Any suggestions on where to procure mailing lists or services to use?

I checked about 3500 library websites and emailed over 1000 of them with good results. I compiled all the directors' names, email addresses, links to "suggest a book" online forms and web addresses into a Kindle book. Right now it's $5.99 for my Createspace friends, but I will probably raise the price in a month or so. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004YEMYEI
It tooks hours and hours (I'm retired) to find all this info and although a websearch easily finds libraries it takes several more clicks (and minutes) to get the rest of the info. I wanted it to be easy and fast for my next book, hence the list to save time.
