Embarrassed to admit that I'd never heard of this book before, but Dave makes it sound pretty sweet. I'm traveling three of the next four weeks -- DC visit, Memorial Day vaca, then Bonnaroo -- so I may post rarely, but I'll take the book along in my travels (EOC shout-out) and try to keep up.
Jim: have a great vacation! Jen and I will be traveling as well next week, but let us know when your DC visit is as that's near our neck of the woods and we always love meeting up with friends whenever possible. :D
I got mine. I'll start it soon. I'm hip-deep in incest and parricide at the moment (and loving it). :D
Got my copy. I actually found a book that contains the entire trilogy for peanuts, so if (when!) I love it, I've got the other two to struggle to make time for. ;)

Hey, that sounds like my copy! Are the other 2 books THE THIEF AND THE DOGS and MIRAMAR? And with a really '80s-looking cover?

That's the one. At first I was thinking, how can this be the entire trilogy? Those other two books are pretty short.

Dueling vacations have prompted us to slightly change our scheduled episodes. We will publish the episode discussing ch. 1-11 on Tuesday, May 24th, and then publish another episode covering the remainder of the novel on June 14th.

Our reading/podcasting schedule:
Chs. 1-11 – May 24
Chs. 12-end - June 14
I've already finished the first selection, and it's a great and fast-paced read. The story takes place on a single street in 1940s Cairo and covers a broad spectrum of behaviors within a small space and time. Religion is a big theme, as you might expect, but equally examined are the separate roles of men and women (in marriage and otherwise), drug use, emerging technologies, homosexuality, and -- there's no other way to put it, really -- the art of crippling oneself.
We hope you'll join us in reading this Nobel Prize winner, and that you enjoy the book!
