Book 1 is better :p I'm not willing to read a series out of order and I'm not willing to read four books of a series I have, up till now, not been particularly interested in just to read the 5th book for a group read! When does the read end? Got exams this month and next, so I might not have much time for it. Will consider ordering it, though.
As I actually bought this and read it, I guess I'll comment on it!The plot was... not excellent and there was too much meandering about with not much going on for it to be great, but it was good. At least, it was solid.
I liked the concept on vampires, though I wish there were a bit more explanation as to why she's using Eastern European terms (strigoi, if I'm right, is Romanian for vampire). I know she says they're all from Eastern Europe and Russia but I'd like to know more about the names. Maybe she goes into it more later.
I liked how she worked the bits about Lissa alone into the plot while not breaking the first person narrative. It was a bit of a cheap way of doing it, but I suspect that this bond will have a more important role in the future.
Rose got on my nerves at times. I suppose that you should never like any character all of the time, but she just went too far from time to time.
I did not like how Dimitri was immediately introduced as being "hot". She's trying to run away from him. Most of the time people don't stop to check out those who want to stop them to consider their hotness. I would have preferred to get a description of him a bit later in the book when she's stuck with him as her mentor.
From the first book I can already tell that:
A) She's going to end up with Dimitri at the end of it all, going through a number of other flings to get there.
B) Something's going to happen to Dimitri which will cause a lot of angst... she might think him dead, or he gets kidnapped, or I dunno. But there's always angst in this type of series.
C) She's going to go on and on about the age difference. 7 years aint that much. That's the difference between me and my boyfriend and I was only 6 months older than her when we started dating.
D) There will be fatalities. Or at least I certainly hope so. You can't have wars without deaths.
E) Lissa's gonna somehow learn to control her power and become some sort of wonder woman like Saint Vladimir.
F) Lissa's somehow going to become Queen.
Aah, but when authors are obvious with their plots. :)
I'll be reading the rest of the series. Now that I've started, I have to know where it'll end up.
You are right! But Rose didn't bug me as much. I loved Lissa but about your speculations about the rest (view spoiler). I really enjoyed this series it is my favorite until now, unless u have other series suggestions ;)
I've got to be honest I didn't like VA. I read it for group read but I hated Rose with a passion. No words can describe how badly she annoyed me. I also thought that the plot was too slow and not enough happened.
I'm going to read the rest of the series but I'm not expecting too much.
For the slow plot thing, it's a sure thing in book 4: Blood Promise, but it didn't stop me from loving the series. I actually think it's one of my favorite series because I read it while a lot of my friends were, so our enthusiasm kind of rubbed of on everyone!! :D
Haha, that always helps! I can't really love a book with a slow plot. I can like it if it's truly amazing but I could never recommend it or anything. =)
Oh gosh, don't get me started on book 4! Nothing happened except for about 50 pages close to the end that led up to the scene with Dimitri on the bridge.I've never really had that sort of thing where enthusiam for a book or series rubs off between friends. I've had it with music, but never books. It doesn't help that I was the only one reading in English, I guess!
Yah, not a series I'd recommend others spend their money on. And I'm pissed off that the ending isn't an ending. So pissed off in fact that I haven't been able to word my review for the last book yet!
This book was read in May Nouda. If you want to check what books are upcoming look at the group homepage or booshelf
