Yey! Four entries by finishing time, nicely done us!I like your diary, Dru! It sent me and my bf into an arguement about German! lol. It was a good idea to incoporate it (though there are grammar problems - want me to point them out or are you happy with it as it is?). I wish I'd been able to get the Romanian into mine. But Romanian is like Spanish and Italian - null subject - and I'm not familiar enough with the language to go bumbling about with it. It'd end up a butchered mess that makes no sense!!
Thanks Rea, no it's okay leave it like that, I have no idea how to speak German so I was bound to make some mistakes. I only speak Spanish, English and a bit of French.

Hehe thank you Chris! I would have loved the Romanian to make it more atmospheric, though. Maybe next time. :pGerman's really hard because they still use the cases. And then even when you know how to use them, there are sometimes little language subtlties that change them! The Germans know instinctively and you've got to learn. Spanish grammar was much simpler to learn!

Yeah for some people, grammar's pretty basic but I've heard people who believe they speak spanish speak it and they don't at all. It's kind of a hard language to learn.

I've always wanted to learn German to scold my children cause it's a pretty like aggressive language (no offense, I think it's cool) but French is a beautiful language, I wanna learn how to speak it fluently.

No, I don't speak German or Spanish. I used to speak both pretty well but lost them through lack of use. I've still got all the grammar stored away in my head, though! When I've got time I intend to go back and learn both of them.I think the best sounding language is Norwegian. Your voice goes all over the place! I love it. XD
@Rea Never thought about Norwegian. That would be fun to learn, and Romanian and Greek. I speak Spanish and English fluently, and some French but almost none of it.

Nah That's okay. In Lebanon the main language is Arabic, but this is only in the extreme South and extreme North. In the capital, and other regions everyone speaks French and English as fluently as their mother language. When you speak to Lebanese people they fit 3 languages in the same sentence :P It's kinda weird. But at school they pay the most attention to Arabic and French, and then in the 11th Grade you can chose either (Arabic or French) but English is always Mandatory even in small doses :P

@Chris Same happens here sometimes, girls like me and my friends speak spanglish a lot, but I don't when I'm talking to an English speaker you know? Here English is mandatory and Spanish as well in elementary school, but in high school they don't teach spanish as a subject but you have to take hispanic literature.

I like the subject, but sometimes analyzing poems in Spanish is hard. You have to make an oral analysis of the poem and say it in front of the class, has to last 9 minutes and you can only have a paper with the poem written and some notes on it with you. You can't have like the whole speech written down.

Greek is the only language with another alphabet system that I can see myself bothering to sit down and learn. But I'd be more interested in Ancient Greek than modern Greek, if I'm honest. I wanted to learn it at school but it was a year after I moved to France and they wanted me to concentrate on my French instead. :( So I missed out there.I already speak English, French and Dutch. I'd like to pick up Spanish, Italian and German and then I'd have all the languages necessary for Switzerland!
I learnt English and French at school in England, but the French was limited to things like "I go to school on foot" and "I am wearing trousers", so obviously I was really well prepared when I moved there! -_- In France we had to do French and English (though the level of English was really rather low. My English was better than the teacher's English!) and then we got the choice of Spanish, Italian or German. I chose German because of the similarities with English. Two years later we could choose another language and so I started Spanish too. I did Dutch later, after my first bachelors.
The problem with language class in French schools is that they put far too much importance on the grammar of foreign languages and not enough on expanding your vocabulary, whereas I believe it's better to have a large vocab (so that you can actually communicate!) and general grammar.

Italian is so similar to Spanish that I could go to Italy and understand it perfectly. It's more similar to Spanish than to French. Here in Mexico it's almost 3 am...I should go to bed but I don't wanna!

Wow, cool! My friend went to Lebanon cause she has family there and she told me it's amazing. I like Lebanese food, lol that was just random thoughts.
French, Italian and Spanish are all pretty close. In fact, Romanian is the only big Romance language that's very different to the others, and that's because of Turkish and Hungarian influences and the fact that it evolved separate from the main Romance block.When I pick up languages again I think I'll do Spanish first. It's more useful than Italian as more people speak it, and it's still too early for German as I'll just end up mixing it up with my Dutch!
I like languages. :p I'm quite passionate about them. If I could I'd spend my whole time just learning new languages and not bother doing anything else!

You will have to write a passage of minimum 500 words to maximum 3 000 words, in which your story will be set in the PAST. But the difficult thing is, I will assign to each of you the genre of the passage. Choose a number and I will tell you the genre corresponding to the number you chose. The past period shouldn't be specific but just set the story in the PAST! (For this contest your entry can be a poem or short story)
