This is a young adult novel set in a small town in the 1950s or 60s. It's about a girl who becomes good friends with her uncle, who had just left a mental hospital. I believe he was meant to have autism. I think the girl's family owns a boarding house and the uncle falls in love with one of the boarders there. At some point a circus comes to town and the protagonist befriends a girl who works there.
