Kate O'Hanlon (kateohanlon) Hi, I'm Kate. I'm a 24 year old native of Dublin(born and raised northside, currently living southside but quite close to the Liffey).

I've been a big reader since I was a little kid, mostly sci-fi and fantasy. I have a degree in English and philosophy which has left me with a lingering hostility towards 'the classics' but given my the right vocabulary to defend my appreciating of 'genre' titles. I also read a slightly too many romance novels, I haven't yet found a way to defend that.

I work in university admin. That's mostly a bit crap but comes with the massive perk of having borrowing rights to a fairly extensive library, allowing to pursue my eclectic non-fiction interests, currently ancient Mesopotamia and early 20th century attitudes towards sex and sexuality.

Keith Kelly (nedkelly) Hey Kate, thanks for joining the group.

It's good to have a fellow Fantasy and Sci-fi (notice the order?) fan like me in the group. Also I see you're a Sword and Laser member too. I'm a big fan of the podcast and I've been trying get involved in the Monthly Book. How are you finding The Hunger Games?

Kate O'Hanlon (kateohanlon) Yeah, I'm more of a fantasy fan than sci-fi too.

I'm not sure of The Hunger Games yet. I bought it for my sister for Christmas and she adored it so when it got picked for Sword and Laser I was able to just borrow it back off her, which was nice.

I find the premise completely absurd, but I'm trying not to let that get in the way of enjoying it. At the moment the strongest feelings I have about it is that it's an easy enough read to get through a few dozen pages on the bus to work when I'm still a bit tired. That's nice but I'm hoping it gets a little more engaging as I get further into it.

How did you find it?

Keith Kelly (nedkelly) I agree with you about the premise of the book. It's not exactly a very believable world, and that colours the whole book for me.

It does pick up when they get to the arena in my opinion, but the whole motivation behind them being there just seems silly to me. A little more background into the world, and a little more explanation of the politics involved might have made it more believable.

Not too sure why it's such a popular book. There's far better Young Adult books out there.

I have just ordered the hunger games books and they should be here by tomorrow. I have heard people say that the first book is the weakest and that the series picks up after that. Looking forward to reading them anyway.

Nice to meet you Kate. Welcome to the group.

Welcome, Kate. I'm in to Sci-Fi, too. Not so much fantasy, although, I have read my fair share. I've recently started reading some sci-fi classics. If you haven't read them, I can strongly recommend Asimov's Foundation series.
