Aimee Laine (aimee_laine) | 43 comments I have 10-15 book samples on my Kindle. I'll read one, if I like it, I'll click and go to Amazon to perhaps buy it. But if the Kindle file is OVER $7.99, I move on. With maybe 1 exception, I won't buy it if it's being sold for over $7.99. The one I'm reading now, Devon Monk's Magic to the Bone was at the top of my limit.

Now if it's under $5, I jump on it. Did that with Water for Elephants and was so happy I got it for $4.71. :)

I will say I also AVOID $.99 books. I know there are probably some good ones out there, but I need good writing, good EDITING and solid story lines and can't wade through all of them out there to find 'the one'.

Am I being cheap? What's your max price point for an ebook?? What will you jump at almost without reservation?

Carole-Ann (blueopal) I have over 200 books on my "Kindle for PC" (aka laptop) and prices have varied from £0.69 ($0.99) to over £8 (circa $9/10) - those were the Berkley editions of Joey W Hill's Vampire Queen series (which I also have in paperback).

I've found that actually buying e-books from the US publishers and paying in $$ is much cheaper than going Kindle (especially Ellora's Cave stuff) here in the UK.

Since I have nearly 2,000 e-books (not including Kindle) I tend to shop around and run a currency rate calculator to work out the best buy.

OK, I haven't got a Kindle, my laptop is good enough for me - though I really do love to actually HOLD a book (of which I have 1,000's!!)

Magic to the bone was quite good I think though for me it was hard due to lack of Supes lol but over here our prices are also £7.99 which would be $13 over there but I like things under 5 too over here we have a store that does 3 books for £5

I do the e-reader thing and I agree with Aimee $.99 prices give me the impression that it's not worth my time. I don't mind spending a little extra for a good story. The max I've spent on an ebook is $10. I think that was for something of Gena Showalter's, if I remember correctly. But now, the max I try to stick with is roughly $7.99, because I honestly don't think any romance ebook should go higher than that.

☺~Tina~☺ (tina007) | 12 comments I won't spend over $9.99 for an ebook and I try to stay away from those. It depends on the length of the book. I always try to check and see if there is a paperback to see how many pages and I jug the price from there. I've bought plenty of $.99 books some were duds some were good. I've bought some $7.99 book that needed some good editing (and were duds). And I'm really ticked off when that happens.

Aimee Laine (aimee_laine) | 43 comments @Tina with the smilies — I've had the same where you wonder if an editor ever touched the book and how it got through to a $7.99 price point. :( So sad.

message 7: by Terri (new)

Terri (mommy0306) | 9 comments I buy a lot of cheapies/freebies for my kindle. the most I've spent on a kindle book has been 14.99 and that was for the new sookie book back in may. I try to keep my books under 11$ otherwise.

message 8: by Kristy (new)

Kristy Berridge I think I must be old school. I don't do e-books. I love to hold a paperback, smell the pages, snuggle under a blanket and settle in for a good afternoon of reading. If it's a book I really want to read, I'll pay full price because I keep it and read it agin in a few years time.

message 9: by Jen (new)

Jen Wylie | 9 comments I actually buy very few books (I have a lot of author friends) however when I do I won't spend over 4.99.
I've no problem getting free or 0.99 books.

This is a great topic. I've a new story I've written and am shopping around for publishers- many charge 5.99-7.99 for ebooks and I don't know that I'll submit to them. My current publisher sells their books for 2.99 which I'm quite happy about. :P

message 10: by Aimee (new)

Aimee Laine (aimee_laine) | 43 comments @Kristy : I was adamantly that way, too about 7 months ago. Haven't bough a paperback since. :) All ebook.

@Jen : I LOVE the $2.99 - $4.99 price point. It feels like 'home'' to me. I love novellas at $2.99 and novels at $4.99 and am SO happy that mine's like that. :) Feels good when things go 'right' huh? :)

message 11: by Jen (new)

Jen Wylie | 9 comments @Aimee my shorts are all 0.99, as I buyer I like that price, as an author they are fairly easy to sell- but after the site and publisher take their cuts I don't make much of anything LOL I like to consider them ways to reach new readers. :)

message 12: by Aimee (new)

Aimee Laine (aimee_laine) | 43 comments @Jen : Those are 'marketing costs' ;) only in this case you MAKE a few pennies instead of spending a few pennies. :)

Jen Wylie | 9 comments Exactly! :D

Tammy ~Witching Hour Reads~ (03tammy-lynn) | 241 comments Wow I don't really have a price point, if I want it I buy it! (drives my husband nuts)I tend to preorder alot of my books weather its hard cover or soft, that way I get a better deal.

message 15: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Picarella (shellypicarella) | 1 comments I have to say that I don't place any price limit on books. I am an avid shopper of antique books and while I would spend horrible amounts on a tattered edition of one of my favorites, I would not spend a penny on something that did not make me feel as if I "had" to have it. I will re-read the same books over before I buy something just to buy it. I will also say that I am an old school reader that has yet to purchase anything in the e-reader realm. I like pages. Paper pages. LOL!

message 16: by Pam (new)

Pam (kydirtgirl68) | 18 comments No Kindle I have to borrow my daughters lol. I love paperbacks but wont pay over $10 for a book. My money comes from my hubby so I dont buy high books. The highest one ive got he bought me and it was $17. Most of the time I buy mine on sale at the bookstores.

message 17: by Jillian Peery (new)

Jillian Peery | 3 comments Depends on the book! I usually like to keep my paperback books under $15, but sometimes you just have to splurge. On kindle, I rarely spend over $3--but that's due to the fact that it's electronic and not something I can physically hold in my hand.

message 18: by Susan (new)

Susan As a FIRST time author ( self pub e-book ) I wasn't sure what to charge. After speaking with friends, other book buyers in my office...I went with $5.75...and I've sold 8 since August 10.

Not sure if it would have been MORE if I'd lowered price or...I'm not known well enough - YET! ha
If I had charged MORE - would it have sold because of the "it must be good" - but also goes for the $.99 books...some are really good... others come under the category "you get what you pay for".
so
What Think Yee ?

message 19: by Katie (new)

Katie (skateanddonate) | 5 comments If it is .99¢ I'll buy immediately if it sounds interesting. If it is $2.99 I'll usually buy if I'm still thinking about it after browsing other titles. If it is $7.99 or more (this is usually authors I've already read several books by) I'll add it to my wishlist (have to admit here it really pisses me off that titles 10 years old are priced this high). If it is over $9.99 I won't buy it. if it is a must read I'll request it from the library, but I won't buy a print or e version of that title.

If the price is between $9.99 and $2.99 but keeps fluctuating up and down (implying the author is trying to find how high they can go and still make sells) I tend to remove from wishlist without buying.

with the 167 e-books I've read in the last 18 months my notes show the free and .99¢ titles have better editing than the higher priced publisher books.

J.A. Belfield (jabelfield) Interesting, Katie. Care to share some decent titles so I can check them out? :o)

message 22: by Kate (new)

Kate Bowyer (kate_bowyer) | 6 comments I'll buy anything that looks interesting to me, including 99c books. There are so many great stories to choose from out there that it's easy to stay in a certain price range if you want.

message 23: by H.D. (new)

H.D. (hdgordon) | 8 comments I also will buy anything that looks interesting. For the authors I already know and love, i will happily spend $25 on a new release i have been waiting for. I will also try the $.99 if they interest me. Suffice to say, one of my biggest expenses is books!

It's the best habit I can think of having :)
