Saving CeeCee Honeycutt
question
CeeCee's Shame
As someone who has a mentally ill parent, her mothers death was a blessing in disguise. Anyone close to her or her parents should have stepped in. There is plenty people could have done something to help.

CeeCee was let down by all who were close to her until her Great Aunt arrived. Ceecee's father could have stepped up and done so much more. And even the little old lady next door, she could have done more--she tried by having the weekly breakfasts, but she could have been a bit stronger of a daily presence. Instead of feeling sorry for CeeCee there are many people who could have tried to step in. Yes, sadly, the mother's death was a blessing as it brought the Great Aunt into CeeCee's life and the Great Aunt became the positive lifeline in her life.
I loved the life she was given by the aunt. She choose to stay on the right path . Many broken homes the children do not have this chance .i admire this young lady
As you all say, someone should have stepped in but I do not think that at that time-1960's-there was as much recongition of mental illness as there is today. The father just didn't have a clue and immersed himself in his work, the old lady next door was fortunate to have not gotten put off by the clueless dad and the townfolk and school people did not seem to have any helpful ideas either. I think in those days family usually took care of people with these kinds of problems and since there was no family recognizing or knowing what to do, nothing was done. Fortunately, for CeeCee Aunt Tootie came alone and recognized the situation immediately and probably saved CeeCee from a really miserable life.
I agree with Joanna. During the 60's mental illness was not as exposed as today. Society didn't know how to handle it and with that the stigma grew. In addition, today we are more apt to involve ourselves in another s ill circumstance. I loved how CeeCee grew to understand her mother's illness and was blessed with a loving, bright future in the end.
The only person who could have done something, her father, he didn't and that is where the blame lies. the older next door neighbor felt that it would be wrong to take a child from it's mother and basically stayed out but was a presence to little CeeCee but the whole situation was wrong for a child from the word GO.
