Janny (jannywurts) | 414 comments With the discussion of VOl III about to start on Aug 1, any comments, observations or questions on the cover art?

Don used a number of interesting techniques and textures in his rendition - he can answer any questions anyone has, if there is curiosity. One fun thing: he always hides is signature in a feature of the image - can you find it?

As a fun anecdote: he was at work on this at the time we were moving house from Connecticut to Florida. He'd planned to turn the work in, then pack the place, and we'd drive down with horses, while the movers took the rest. That plan blew up when he got a phone call asking for a new Captain Morgan ad campaign...

So I packed the paintings and the art studio (mine) with a friends' help, we hired packers to do the dishes and the books - and I took off with the horses to FL, leaving Don alone in the studio with HIS gear stripped down - just a drafting table, some cardboard boxes, airbrush and paints - and this painting, with the Captain Morgan one pending.

The movers moved OUT around him.

I was in Florida when he finished and turned in this cover - so I didn't see it! He teased that 'if he'd gotten it wrong (he didn't) he'd bust the marriage (not!) grin.

So I was setting up in the new house, repairing fences, and unpacking MY art gear/assembling his drafting table with my paints and brushes, essentially - until it was READY. Then he flew down, abandoning his stuff and car - with nothing but the Capt. Morgan painting under his arm.

He dropped that onto the set up, here, finished IT, flew north to turn it in.

Then cleaned out the apartment/packed his remnants into his car, and drove down.

Both paintings, of course, were superb.

The last Empire painting was done here, and the hardest part - finding the model to match his concept of Mara...that story in the next installment.

Jon (jonmoss) I stumbled upon Don's signature on the Mistress cover this week. I need to pull out the other two and see if I can find it on them.

Wonderful moving story of your migration south. Your lives are such adventures! No wonder you write such fantastic tales and create such beautiful art. :)

Found the other two signatures. Once I knew what I was looking for ... :)

Where is this cover imaged?

Here's the direct link for Servant's painting:

http://www.paravia.com/Janny_Don/webs...

The image will show the full painting/no typography. If you explore this same area of the website, you can also find the other images for the trilogy (and a few odds and ends that Don and I have worked on together.)

It does seem as though these two are disgustingly productive, but the rest of us do some work as well, Kernos - you a doctor and me a psychotherapist. Less tangible, especially my work. Ah well, I wish them both smooth sailing and millions of $$ and lots of happy happy painting and writing.

Bill (kernos) | 59 comments Yeh we all do work I guess. But, I don't think being creating and moving house is in my bag of tricks ;-)

Since I'm deep into The Picture of dorian Gray, I full of WIlde Quotes. On work:

Work is the curse of the drinking classes :)
