Sofia (sofiasmy) | 15 comments Ah I also like Alexandre Dumas, but for me, my favorite would be Jules Verne :)

I admire his imagination, he was a visionary. His books are full of adventures and culture.

Janice (jamasc) | 60417 comments Do I have to have a favorite? *whine*.

Daphne du Maurier would be right up there since she wrote my favorite book of all time, Rebecca

Shirley Jackson, author of The Haunting of Hill House has got to be the author responsible for my addiction to horror stories.

Kimberly | 2033 comments For me I'd have to say Jules Verne. I love his stuff. While my friends were reading Jane Austen I was reading him (Still haven't read Jane Austen's books).

message 8: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Mark Twain. But there are some contenders, for example O Henry and Frances Hodgson Burnett

message 9: by Diana S (new)

Diana S Definitely Charles Dickens Charles Dickens!!!!

message 10: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments Always such a terrible question. I think that Jane Austen is definitely one of my favorites-- Persuasion was fantastic, as are P&P and S&S (cant' say the same for the others, except perhaps Lady Susan)

Lucy M. Montgomery and Louisa May Alcott (with sheer volume of books loved, these two would win. I love their writing styles and their easy way of portraying everything).

Andrew Lang (though perhaps I should say 'editor and adaptor' instead).

message 11: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'll have to read some more Dickens. I'd add Lang, too, I think.

message 12: by Dorottya (new)

Dorottya (dorottya_b) | 35 comments I'm a Jane Austen fangirl. Because I'm a sentimental hopeless romantic... and because her books aren't just fluffy romance, but great portrayal of society, too.

Emma Gibbs | 4 comments With many of the classic authors, I usually read one of their novels just to say that I have read that author - however, Daphne du Maurier is one of the exceptions as she keeps me hooked from the first page to the last. I have read three of her novels, including Rebecca, and I can't wait to discover more of her books!

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Oh this is hard - I can't pick 1.

Ernest Hemingway is my all time favorite.

But I also love Daphne du Maurier, Jane Austen, and Margaret Mitchell since she wrote Gone with the Wind!

message 17: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1794 comments I think I'm going with Elizabeth Gaskell as my favorite.

Though honourable mentions go to Jane Austen, Leo Tolstoy, Arthur Conan Doyle, Flora Thompson & Niccolò Machiavelli

message 18: by Samantha A (new)

Samantha A George Orwell, definitely. 1984 is one of my favorite books of all time.

message 19: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I would have to say Wilkie Collins and Daphne du Maurier are my most favorite.

message 20: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2733 comments Too many! These are my favorites - Oscar Wilde, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Jane Austen.

message 21: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18517 comments Classics and me don't tend to mix but I suppose the more recent classic authors such as Samantha's suggestion of George Orwell are more to my liking. And J.R.R. Tolkien.

June | 159 comments Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is on the lone of 50 year but One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is over 50 years old. I've read a lot from him lately, two for my chunksters. I've enjoyed everything. He puts so much detail into his characters. I also like he has a different book for each think he went through. Ivan Denisovich for hard labor, Cancer Ward depicting a hospital treating party members and prisoners together. I really enjoy his short stories and poems as well.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9225 comments I would also have to go with Daphne du Maurier. I have read 4 books by her so far and have enjoyed every one. Her writing is just incredible.

I also really love Wilkie Collins, Oscar Wilde and Emily Brontë. The Woman in White, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Wuthering Heights are 3 of my favourite books of all-time.

I am currently reading The Count of Monte Cristo and loving it so I reckon Alexandre Dumas will end up on this list too! :)

message 24: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1150 comments Would you have asked me that about 20 years ago, I would have said: the 3 Brontë-sisters! After reading a lots of classics this year, I think I'll answer Wilkie Collins and Elizabeth Gaskell. Although I really like Thomas Hardy as well.

message 25: by Mari (new)

Mari My favorite classic author changes throughout the years, as time goes by. Presently my favorite is Thomas Wolfe. His writing is very descriptive, quite lovely, and at times passionately difficult. He increased the interest in challenging myself to more fulfilling literature.
