Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Who is your least favorite character?
My least favorite (in the novels) would have to be Bellatrix Lestrange not because she is evil, but because she is utterly flat. There is no nuance about her, just unadulterated psychotic evil. Rowling seems to do better at explaining why other evil main characters got to be the way they were. However, I think she was played excellently in the films by Helena Bonham Carter, and redeemed the character a little.
I love all the characters! Evil or not, they all have their amazing personalities or qualities, and they were all fantastic. But maybe...Cornelius Fudge. He had no backbone, and he just wanted to be successful at any cost. He just wanted to be in the newspaper and was afraid of bad publicity. He didn't believe Voldemort was back, mainly because he didn't want to believe. But thats just his personality. I love how J.K Rowling portrayed him, and I think it was great to watch him as he failed or succeeded.
erm... i think my least favourite charater has to be Dobby. WAIT ALL THE DOBBY FANS, BEFORE YOU KILL ME GIVE ME A CHANCE TO EXPLAIN!!! Dobby just plain got on my nerves. he was so so so annoying and in the films if i saw a crazu elf jumping on my bed and praising me like he did harry, i would either go get some serious medication or like, scream? it WAS very very very sad though when he died...

Umbridge and Wormtailthen Pansy and Skeeter.

and I didn't like the marauders and lily, not that I hated them, but as I see that everyone like them, I have to mention it. I liked Remus just a bit, but after he got together with tonks, I changed my mind. I hate Tonks. Airhead. And lily, she was just a normal boring girl.

every deatheater, except Snape, and not that I liked Malfoys, I didn't hate them either, but more than marauders. Draco is still good, but he isn't in my best 10. wonder why everybody loves him. scarycat.

Did I forget someone important?
Easily Draco Malfoy for two reasons. 1.) Because he's a rich and spoiled little snot (don't we all hate those?) and 2.) Every single action of his, especially in the last books, whether it's considered to be good or bad, is ultimately motivated by his cowardice. He believes in nothing except what will guarantee his security.
Professor Umbridge was my least favorite of all. I absolutely loathed her. She had no apparent reason to be evil. She just WAS. At least Voldemort had a bad history of darkness, and abandonment.
ron weasley is a jealous patheitc coward who got into fihgts with his friends all the time and abandoned them when they needed him

Excuse me!!! Do you like a single character from the books...? because you have listed almost all of them as your least fav, including Dumbly, Harry, Ron and Hermione...
Jasmine wrote: "ron weasley is a jealous patheitc coward who got into fihgts with his friends all the time and abandoned them when they needed him"That's what makes him human darling...
Guys, when you say a certain character is your least favourite or that you HATE him or her, that's where the success of JKR's writing lies!!! It's easy to make people to like characters, but it's far more difficult to make them hate them... The discussion is supposed to be on the 'least developed' character, I think that's what the one who started this topic meant. As for me, I don't think there's a single important character that hasn't been developed over the course. Almost every characteristic of human nature has been portrayed through JKR's books, be that evil, envy, love, hatred, affection, malice, revengefulness or warmth...

Oh! Ok then... :)
Cho Chang. * She cries all the time.
* How can she kiss Harry while mourning for Cedric. It's okay if she moved on but doing that was completely disrespectful and an insult to Cedric's memory.
* She expects Harry to understand her, but she didn't bother to understand him and consider why he didn't want to talk about Cedric's death.
* She's spiteful and paranoid and tried to make Harry Jealous when he told her he had to meet Hermione.
* She hates Hermione for no logical reason.
*Ginny is way better.
I now add Madame Maxime to my least favourite character, who is Cornelius Fudge. She used Hagrid, and was too ashamed to admit to being half-giant. She thinks she is better than every-one else, and is very spiteful. Again, I love the way each character has their own unique personality, and J.K. Rowling is an amazing author, but those two characters I love to hate.
Shelby wrote: "Haha I love how no one said that your least favorite character is voldemort!!! :)"Yeah! I actually like Voldemort...not because he's evil, but because he's so sly and cunning and expertly written too!

True. And she was the first girl to kiss Harry =/
When i'm only regarding the single books as such it's quite easily Malfoy. He's not even capable enough to be the looming dreadful arch nemesis, no he has to whine around to Daddy and uncle Severus to find testosterone enough to counter Harry ... a self-conscious, skinny, malnourished whimp of a kid that starts off at point Zero in regards to magic when Draco likes to appear as if he had been raised to rule them all and would incorporate all the might, knowledge and importance of Magic. That's epic fail and his petty insolence tops that off.But when i regard the complete series or even more, the complete history as told to us by JKR including 1000 years of wizarding world and what all wen on behind the scenes in the first war, then it has to be Albus Brian Wulfric Percival Dumbledore the great manipulator and self declared humanist and muggle lover. What a giant jerk, inept educator, sanctimonious politician and catastrophic military leader. Is there anything between the birth of Riddle and Dumbledore's death where the bastard was right and did his best to fight the darkness? Instead he's out there playing his chess game with the lives of his devout followers sitting out the shitty prophecy and ultimately depending upon the self sacrifice of a boy whose life he personally made to the living image of hell on earth from the unneccessary death of his parents over the Dursley exile up to the chuzpe to give him the advice to let himself get killed at the end. I'm not sure who's more evil. Riddle or Dumbledore and therefore i despise the old man ever since the last book was published. Two of the greatest headmasters wtf?
But with that steam written off my soul... Ron Weasley is also a good candidate in this poll... for all the reasons given by my forewriteres... he's illoyal, unthankful, jealous and loud mouthed without any real talents just monopolizing on "being friend with Harry". He and his freaky hero worshipping sister together would completelly annihilate each other from the face of the universe in an explosion of equal BWL love and hate.

Sad, isn't it? :'(
This may seem weird but Harry Potter was my least favorite character... he was the least interesting character to me but everyone else is fantastic. The professors, evil witches and wizards, the Dursleys and the Weasleys all fabulous! But for me there was nothing truly special about Harry's personality or disposition.

No matter what a Dumbledore lover I am, I am impressed by the way you analysed his shortcomings. But also surprised. The day JKR revealed Dumbledore's "human" side is the day people like me fell more in love with him, because by then, Dumbly had been described as the "wise old man", the angel, the saint, the best wizard who ever lived... He had been brought up to the stature of GOD! But when people learnt of his selfish ambitions, his thirst for knowledge, his 'alleged' desire for 'the greater good'... They started hating him! Guys, he was only a teenager... who doesn't dream of fame and wealth (in his case knowledge) and ruling the world and 'making a difference' in their youths...? Of course he was ambitious, of course he had got carried away by Grindelwald's, mind you, Grindelwald's idea of the 'greater good'. But, oh cmon... He was just a hot-blooded youngster...
Now, as for his family, try to understand the state of mind of a boy who was set to embark on a life-changing journey but was then forced to stay at home to take care of his sister... How frustrated he would nave felt!
And as for his guilt, yes, Dumbledore was scared to confront Grindelwald because he didn't want to find out who killed Ariana. He blamed himself all his life for her death, don't you see? And that's what prevented him from pursuing wealth or power... Because he had realised they were bad for him! And that he wanted to spend his life doing something he gained the most pleasure at, shaping young minds.
Manipulator? Yes. Muggle-lover, definitely. Humanist? the greatest ever. I mean, who would think of preventing a boy's soul from getting tainted with death in the feace of his own death...?
What did he do to fight darkness...? The entire series darling... He destroyed one horcrux himself, and when he realised he would die before being able to destroy the rest, he trained Harry for the rest. For why he led Harry towards his own death, we all know the answer.
Albus Dumbledore was willing to put the boy he loved so much in mortal danger for HARRY'S OWN SAKE! Because there was no other way Voldemort could be destroyed! Can't you imagine his agony over all this?
Can't you see his greatness at trusting good people like Hagrid or Snape when nobody did? Can't you see his foresight at planning the ENTIRE BLOODY THING? Can't you see his remorse? Can't you see his efforts for the school or his students?
I think no number of words are enough for me in Dumbly's defence. He is, indeed, the greatest wizard, an unusual human being, and one of the best characters ever written...
Ron weasley is like, my favorite!!! He's awesome. GO RON!!!!

Umbridge-- she was just pure evil. I swear, in parts of the fifth book, I just wanted to murder that woman.Wormtail-- he's a total coward. Cowards in my opinion are the worst.
Fudge was a moron and a coward too, but I just couldn't hate him too much. I think because in the first few books, he just seemed like a harmless little man.

So true. ^.^
Sakura wrote: "Umbridge. She is the main reason why the 5th book is my least favorite of the series."The 5th was the best book due to the fact that from start to finish, the action and suspense never faltered.
Umbridge was a necessary evil and a character that you knew would be overcome in the end.
I loved Voldemort, if I was a villain, he would be it. Loved Dumbledore. It's not hard to understand his character and why he did the things he did, when he was young or old. I kept waiting for Harrys' development to include more magic and wanted him to be a better wizard. To put him on the same magical level as Ron was disappointing.
Least favorite character would have to be Fudge. Horrible leader/ petty and jealous person.
Umbridge and Reeta Skeeta, especially because of the movies, i really wanted to kill umbridge D: The actresses were dead on for both characters. (:
because by then, Dumbly had been described as the "wise old man", the angel, the saint, the best wizard who ever lived... He had been brought up to the stature of GOD! And he was... in he eyes of an emotionally stunted teenager for whom Hagrid was a great buddy and Ron Weasley was the nearest thing to a friend he knew on earth... We were MADE to worship Dumbledore because Harry was led to think this way... by Dumbledore and all his sycophants around him (yeah the group that did not once in 10 years look up what the Dursleys were doing with him, the group that did not ask how Sirius could have betrayed the man who by all standards was his very own brother and helped him escape his dreadful dark side family, the group that constantly blabbed about Dumbledore being great and Hogwarts being safe... except when you're Harry of course)
And as for his guilt, yes, Dumbledore was scared to confront Grindelwald because he didn't want to find out who killed Ariana. He blamed himself all his life for her death, don't you see? And that's what prevented him from pursuing wealth or power... Because he had realised they were bad for him! Manipulator? Yes. Muggle-lover, definitely. Humanist? the greatest ever. I mean, who would think of preventing a boy's soul from getting tainted with death in the face of his own death...?
I've never talked about Grindelwald! I spoke about "from Riddles birth to Albus Death"...
He never did anything to stop the sixteen year old Riddle from becoming a dark Lord. He never did anything to stop the thirty year old Riddle from becoming a danger and menace to Society... he never stopped them from recruiting INSIDE HOGWARTS! That's not only failing, that#s bloody aiding and abetting an enemy of the state. As it's de facto leader none the less... he could have educated the lot not to be as dark as they turned out to be or not educate them at all when he saw they were a danger and not changeable into decency... he was the chief legislator AND judge and could have done more to stop them from slythering out of justice He was the darned boss of wizarding UNO! when english wizards were already to corrupt to do anything against the darkness creeping up to consume them wholesale where were the goddamned blue helmet troops forcing them to change?
What did he do to fight darkness...? The entire series darling... He destroyed one horcrux himself, and when he realised he would die before being able to destroy the rest, he trained Harry for the rest. For why he led Harry towards his own death, we all know the answer.
Yes. Complacency. Suicide can't be the only way to extract a fragment of a soul from somebody's physical form. Which would mean "Albus didn't do the research". He just thought of ONE solution and went haywire with it.
But that's already the very end of Albus long chain of continuous failings... the very first start even before hagrid got expelled (did anybody wonder why he never was exhonerated even after the involvement of Riddle was a proven fact? He didn't get a new wand he wasn't allowed to resit his OWLs and NEWTs and that after he was proven innocent of the crimes they'd expelled him for... Jay... Dumbledore got him back from Azkaban... but then? He let him drop again to be another usefull tool in his arsenal and never did him right the wrongs he himself made possible! How could he be at Hogwarts AND the mighties bestest most clever wizard of his time and NOT see the giant 60 foot basilisk slither around the castle trying to eat students? That's mega fail. From other idiocies like trapping the Dark Lord's specter with an artifact that's hidden away in a school behind tasks three first graders could outsmart or not recognising his purposedly best friend in the world Alistor Moody as a fraud and impersonator for a WHOLE YEAR we don't wanna to start as that's leading into micro analysis...
Not stopping three generations of Death eaters, from 1940 to 1998, almost sixty years, to grow into their power at his own school is his greatest failing... and never standing up for the muggleborns he so heroically champions in the press and the official biography of his is another big fault in his persona and legend.
if you've read the same 7 books i have there's not a lot left he really did good and well, all bright intentions and genious plans aside. It's the way we dfo something not the reason behind it which defines if we've done a good job. And in the case of Albus Dumbledore it's not even rying and failing, it's just sitting as a spectator and let the destined path of doom play out. With Riddle, with TWO wars, with Harry's "fate" just because of a prophecy, something at least half of the wizarding world don't even take serious as a magical art...
Yeah i'm bitter about this stuff and i'm probably putting too much emphasis on some of these points but the fact stays that without Albus Dumbledores inactivity there wouldn't have even been the need to sacrifice Harry as he had a full 40 years to Stop Voldemort before Trelawney all went the Exorcist on him!
Bjoern wrote: "because by then, Dumbly had been described as the "wise old man", the angel, the saint, the best wizard who ever lived... He had been brought up to the stature of GOD! And he was... in he eyes of..."
Its completely fine that you are being bitter and critical. I am enjoying this. Ok, so..
You say that we were 'made' to think of Dumbledore as great, made to worship him because Harry worshiped him since we read the entire series from Harry's perspective. But then, what about the rest of the wizarding world...? I think there is enough evidence throughout the books that he was considered great. Was Dumbledore capable enough to lure the entire wizarding world into believing that he was the greatest wizard that ever lived...?
"He never did anything to stop the thirty year old Riddle from becoming a danger and menace to Society... he never stopped them from recruiting INSIDE HOGWARTS!"
Well, the only logical explanation to this is that Dumbledore never gathered enough evidence against the troop to expel them or take action against them. And I am sure that cannot be termed as 'aiding and abetting'. Also, Dumbly was an idealistic guy. He might have believed that this is simply a teenaged rebel and hoped that it will eventually die out! Yes, if this was so I too think it was pretty stupid of him. But then, its the only logical explanation.
"He just thought of ONE solution and went haywire with it."
I hope even you will agree that removing a fragment of somebody's friggin soul from another one will require bloody advanced magic! Even by putting aside the belief that Dumbly was the greatest wizard that ever lived, I am sure that he was a pretty wise one considering things like how he reached the idea of horcruxes, how he advised Hermione to save Sirius, how he estimated Voldemort's moves. He had seen through Voldemort the very time he met him in the orphanage! But I think all that while he only wished that Riddle would come around...
As for Hagrid, I think there must be some kinda rule where once expelled, a student is not re-admitted in the school.
Yes, Dumbly didn't see the Basilisk coming inside Hogwarts, but oh cmon... you must give some credit to Voldemort too! After all, he was fairly advanced in Dark Arts by then. But Dumbly did find out about it when Hagrid was vindicated and I think it has been clearly mentioned in the books that "that is the reason Voldemort did not dare unleash it again."
As for how three first-graders got through to the Sorcerer's stone, we all know that teachers like Quirrel and even Snape did not put too much effort into it.
'Stopping three generations of death eaters...' I would assert again that the kids were very inconspicuous in school, mere rebels!
Official biography? Which one...? Pls don't tell me the one written by Rita Skeeter... That's just a sensational piece of crap.
You must also not forget that Dumbledore wasn't the Principal of the school during Voldy's times and so he had limited authority. It is possible that Riddle was in the then Principal's (I don't remember his name) good books.
Basically, supporting somebody does not mean worshipping him or her blindly, simply refusing to see their flaws. Of course I see that Dumbly was only human and that he had as many flaws as any human being! But I still love him, and that's how it has to be. :)
Bjoern , sorry, but you are being very short-sighted.There is plenty to pick apart in these books, but basically remember that the books are written from Harry's point of view. We can't possibly know how events transpired when Riddle was in school with his "Death Eater" friends. We can't possibly know what Dumbledore did or didn't do, and his reasons behind his actions. There are plenty of holes in these books, but Harry was never a fully-trained and powerful wizard , so the tasks set before him couldn't have been to difficult.
