This picture book tells the story of Matt and his journey to discover what makes him "special". I thought that this story was so positive and uplifting! I also liked that the book included an activity to do with your children (or in your classroom) on the last page. In the activity, it asks the reader to choose some of the words provided that describes "how special you are" and to write them on a piece of paper. It would be fun to see what the children write and ask them why they chose that word!
Madeline
by: Ludwig Bemelmans
Madeline a story about one little girl, named Madeline, and her adventures with the eleven other little girls in a boarding school. One night, Madeline wakes up crying and is rushed to the emergency room to have her appendix removed. When the other girls go to visit Madeline in the hospital, they find her room full of candy and toys! Madeline then proudly shows the scar on her stomach (from the surgery) to the girls. I think this story is very relatable (all children go to the doctor/hospital at some point) and well written. However, I do not know how I could incorporate this into the curriculum.
And Tango Makes Three
by: Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell
This story was so cute and I love that it was based on a true story! Two male penguins, Roy and Silo, raise baby Tango as their own. The story shows that families come in so many ways, and all kinds of love can create a family. It would be fun to read this story to my students then have them draw their families so they drawings can be hung around the classroom.
