Emmeline looked up to see a drunken man stumble in the cabin where she and Will where sitting. Giving a skeptical look to Will, she said, "You're Haymitch?"

Rue~alwaysa1directioner~ (Ruealwaysa1directioner) "Yes I am Haymitch. What did you think I was gonna be like? Your father? You think I have no worries like him?" Emmeline stiffens beside Will. He knows why. Emmeline's whoe family is dead. Will felt like killing Haymitch. He was such a heartless drunk. Haymitch sat on the seat opposite them, holding a cup of brandy. Will asked, "So, what are your tips to win the Hunger Games?" "Just stay alive.", Haymitch replied.

"I plan on it," Emmeline said coldly, crossing her arms. Haymitch snorted and murmured "Good luck with that" before taking another sip of his brandy. Emmeline practically exploded with anger. Shooting up, she snatched his cup away and hurled it against the far wall, hearing it smash into little pieces. It left an ugly brown stain on the wall. "What the devil?" Haymitch started, but she stormed out of the room before he could finish his sentence.

~❤Rikka❤~ *living is just a symptom of dying* Alyx was pushed none too gently into the cabin and just barely managed to stop herself from tripping, her hand sinking into the softness of an arm chair to steady herself. The peacekeepers left so quickly she didn't even see them go and was left looking around in surprise at the luxurious decorations adorning the cabin.

Rue~alwaysa1directioner~ (Ruealwaysa1directioner) Will sat there, dumbfounded. He had never seen Haymitch in his life but he already hated that dude. Will was lost in thoughts about how he was gonna kill Haymitch when he heard him say, "You like her.", suddenly somber. "wha.... Oh! No! I do not like her!" Will shouted. "you don't. You love her. Look at your face. You're turning red. Would that happen if you didn't at least have a crush on her." Haymitch said. "Fine. Maybe I do because she's so brave and strong and..." Will was about to continue when he saw Emmeline enter the room again. Effie had her hand on the small of Emmeline's back. Did she hear anything? I don't think so. The walls are too thick. And she came in too late.

Sarah Kliora (sarahgraykay) When Millie and Luke boarded the train, they were still holding hands. Then the door shut suddenly behind them. Millie jumped. The reality of her being a tribute finally sank in. Doors quickly shutting behind her, her isolation in the train, besides Luke and the mentor they were about to meet. It was all becoming real. Then Rosalie came up behind them. "Oh! Have you seen the inside yet?"

"I thought we were already on the inside...not to be disrespectful, Rosalie,"said Millie.

"Well, did you open up that door in front of you yet?"

Millie looked at the door and shook her head.

Rosalie straightened herself up. "Well why don't you take a look?"

Nervously, she let go of Luke's hand and opened the door. When she walked in, she was astonished by how fancy, delicate, and beautiful the room was. At that moment what she thought was a nightmare suddenly became a dream. She turned to Luke and smiled, but Luke said nothing, eventually found Millie's gaze and smiled back. She turned back. Now, it was a nightmare again.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Emmeline stared hatefully at Effie as she was ushered into the room, and just barely prevented herself from gesturing rudely at her. Her face was still red in anger at Haymitch, and now at Effie. Will was blushing violently and wouldn't meet her gaze. Emmeline frowned. What had happened while she was gone? She didn't regret her earlier behavior.

Rue~alwaysa1directioner~ (Ruealwaysa1directioner) Will couldn't bear to look at Emmeline's face. He was just to embarrassed. Not because he liked/loved her but because he had just admitted it to Haymitch. Why in the world did he do that??? Effie was going on and on about how magnificent the train and the Capitol were. But, Will was too busy staring at his hands, trying to avoid Emmeline's burning gaze. Not mention he was super tired. Thank God dinner was going to be served in about 15 minutes. He was starting to doze off when Emmeline asked, "What'd you and Haymitch talk about?". Will met her eyes for a second, before ducking his head again. "Nothing important." Will murmured under his breath. Of course, what he said caused him to feel knives in his stomach. Emmeline was everything to him.

The time had come to board the train. After the incident in District Three, Louise was almost glad to leave it forever. If she came back, her home would be empty and loveless. Why should she care if she lived or died in the Hunger Games? Her life held no purpose. She would be the tribute famous for the death of her mother as well as a few tributes from other dsitricts. There was no pride anymore. There was no hope.

She was led up some stairs into District three's cabin. She sat down in a chair. The room was elaborate but Louise didn't notice. Through her glasses she saw only her mother's dead eyes and her father's aguish.

A door slid open. A muscular woman in her thirties walked through. District three's mentor. Her eyes were gray and cold as stone and her lips were presses tightly together. Her hair was wrapped in a severe bun and her jaw was set firmly. She was determined for District three to win his year. Louise looked away. The victor wouldn't be her, Louise knew the woman decided. She was counting on the boy.

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Kliora (sarahgraykay) Rosalie left Luke and Millie alone in the District 2 cabin. They nervously sat down in blue silk chairs. You wouldn't see that in District 2 ever. Even if it was just for a short time, they both wanted to enjoy the experience while it lasted. It was quiet for a few minutes, the Luke spoke.

"So do you know who our mentor is this year?"

"I'm guessing it's that one girl who won a few years back. I think she's maybe about 19 by now?"

Luke remembered this girl. He'd seen her at school before she was reaped at 16. She was menacing, crazy, pure arrogance. He didn't know what to expect, but if he knew one thing about these games, mentors most of the time root for one tribute over the other. Maybe she won't but he would be ready for anything. But their mentor would make Millie and Luke work their hardest, because almost every year, someone from District 1, 2, or 4 would become the victor. This mentor would make sure they would become victorious.

"I wonder what she'll be like," Luke said.

Millie laughed. "She can't possibly be as bad as we think!"

An umfamilar voice echoed throughout the cabin which made them both startle. "No, I'm much worse." And with a grin on her face, she mocked Rosalie. "Happy Hunger Games! And you better hope the odds are in your favor, you're going to need those odds."

With that Luke twitched.

Haymitch's hands were itching; he kept staring the empty cup that Emmeline had thrown against the wall. Finally, he excused himself and left the room, obviously to get himself some more brandy. Emmeline exhaled sharply and shrunk back into her seat. She looked at Will-- what was going on in his thoughts? "I can't believe this," she whispered. "This is....." she drifted off, unable to finish her sentence. It felt weird, talking to Will like this. She'd never really talked to him before, but it was now or never, she guessed. Finally, she said somberly, looking at Will's face, "We're both going to die, aren't we?"

Rue~alwaysa1directioner~ (Ruealwaysa1directioner) Will stared at Emmeline unable to respond. He was going to die, no doubt. But he was going to make sure he had done everything he could do to save Emmeline first. Unable to sit there any longer, Will got up and went to his room.

Immediately she regretted her words. Of course they were going to die, but that didn't mean that she could sulk and moan and disappoint Will either. If anyone deserved to go back, it was him. Emmeline had no family, no one to take care of and no one to rely on her. Will had a family. He had people who wanted him back, who could easily starve without him. She opened her mouth and considered going after him, but then stopped herself with a sigh.

"My name is Elise," their mentor said. "I'm here to make sure District Three will win. Of course, you two aren't anything special, so I'll just have to make sure you don't die completely embarrassingly."

Louise stiffened. She didn't think this woman would be so cruel. Despite being already overwhelmed with everything, a tiny part of Louise still wanted to live. She wanted to breathe and laugh with her siblings.

And then she remembered everything and she wanted to die. Die. Die.

"I'm going to make sure you live for the first thirty seconds. After that, you're on your own. We will train vigorously as soon as we get to the Capitol, so be prepared." Louise nodded.

The metal door slammed shut.

Cara threw herself against it over and over until she collapsed against the cool metal. She clawed at it uselessly with her nails. There was no escape now. She closed her eyes. The train lurched a bit as it began to move again, taking her away from everything she had even known. She couldn't get the thought of it out of her head. How would she impress everyone in the Capitol? Would her designer be crazy or a genius? What was the area going to look like? How would she die?

The thoughts swarmed her head like tracker jackers. She needed to distract herself, take herself away from it all. She had an idea. She picked herself up and creeped around the cabin excitedly. There was a elaborately decorated table, two chairs made of a lacquered dark wood and a deadpan green ottoman. She perched herself on the ottoman and crossed her legs. She shut her eyes and started breathing peacefully. Her face relaxed and her mind swam with blurry memories.

Before each long dive to the bottom of the ocean Cara would meditate for one hour or more. This action synched her mind with her body and made her languid enough to blend with the water and become a fluid. Not in ther literal sense, but she felt close. Water was her nature, a part of her, and it belonged to her. Water made her feel graceful and powerful as a queen. The familiar act of meditating almost made Cara happy.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

As soon as Effie left, Emmeline slipped out of her cabin once more. The train was huge; there was so much to explore. Soon she stumbled upon a girl behind the door marked 'District 4'. "Oops," she said, starting to duck back out. "My bad."

At the sound of fingers outside the door Cara's eyelids fluttered open. A girl, a tribute. Cara's stomah clenched with fear. It's not the Games. Not yet. Words came out of her mouth. "No problem," she said in her soft voice. She leaped up with speed from her sitting position and stopped at the door.

Cara was not outgoing in he slightest. She was quiet and while she had no enemies, she had no good friend she could confide in. She was extremely close to her family and that was strange to kids in her school. Also, being a diver, the people who could have really been her friends were silent most of the time. No one speaks underwater. But something about the fear of losing everything made her want to leave an impression o hersel in someone's mind. She did not want to be forgotten.

"Please talk with me. I feel lonely."

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Emmeline averted her gaze, but her eyes widened slightly when the girl asked her to stay. But why? They were enemies. Doomed to hack each other to pieces in the months to come. Still, Emmeline stayed. She couldn't explain it, but she felt lonely too, wanted someone to talk to. She'd never really spoken to someone since her youngest sister died in her arms.

Without saying a word, Emmeline sat down on a chair and looked at her hands. She didn't know what to say. Finally, "This sucks."

Thank you. Thank you. Cara's heart wanted to scream all kinds of gratitude at the girl who could very well be her murderer. Thank you for staying. Thank you for speaking. Thank you for being a living, breathing, human being who actually cared.

The girl's comment made her laugh out loud. She didn't know that she could still do that. Her laugh was high pitched and childlike. Her mother often said she sounded like a dolphin, which embarrassed Cara. Now though, she didn't care who heard her. "That," she gasped, "is an extreme understatement!"

It took her a moment to get calmed down. She sat down across from the the girl "I'm really not this crazy. It just feels good for someone to come out and say the truth. The winners of my District always talk about glory and honor. I don't…" Cara trailed off. "Oh, I'm Cara, by the way." She stuck out her hand. Her fingers were still prune-y from her swim this morning.

message 28: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 02, 2012 08:50PM) (new)

Emmeline took it, noticing the prune-like wrinkles which marred the hands of this girl from District 4. Her own were rough and callused, with stubby fingernails and torn cuticles. Courtesy of three years in the mines. "I'm Emmeline. It's nice to meet you, I guess." She shook the girl's hand, then her arm just dropped limply to her side. The full realization of her predicament hit her like a brick. Exhaling sharply, Emmeline fell back into her seat and steadied herself as the world spun in circles about her head. She was a tribute in The Hunger Games. There were 23 others like her. She was going to die.

Silent tears ran down her face, though she tried hard to hold them back. They still came. The Capitol had taken away everything she'd ever held dear. First her father, who claimed to love them but then drank himself to death. Then their mother, who lost her sanity, leaving Emmeline's three younger sisters to starve to death. One by one, each taking their last breaths in her arms. And now they would take her own life, but not without first destroying her soul.

"Sorry," she said, furiously dashing away the tears. "Honor and glory have nothing to do with it. Haymitch is the only guy in my district who ever won, and he's drunker than a fish. I haven't got a chance."

Rue~alwaysa1directioner~ (Ruealwaysa1directioner) Will went back to his room slowly. He felt empty. Was it the fact that he was going to The Hunger Games or was it the possibility of Emmeline dying? It was very late. But Will wasn't tired. So, he sat on his bed and thought about the reaping. He never did expect Thomas to be picked. His name had only been entered once for goodness sake! The odds had certainly not been in their favour. Man, someone should really change that phrase... Will thought to himself. He spent his time thinking about everything that had to do with The Hunger Games. He felt himself dozing off. He didn't want to sleep yet! It would just make him wake up again because of the nightmares! But soon, he felt himself grow more tired. So, he gave himself to the darkness.

Oh, if only the cameras were rolling. Wouldn't the folks at the Capitol be intrigued with the girls from Districts four and twelve pouring out their fears to each other. Cara thought that both of them weren't afraid to hold anything back because they were complete strangers and that neither has much time left.

Cara felt sorry for Emmeline. Haymitch had no good qualities. "We just… we can't go in with that mentality. Look at you." Cara gestured at Emmeline. "You are used to tough labor. You're strong. You're funny- people at the Capitol will appreciate that. 'No chance' my foot. Youve got just as good a chance as everybody."

But then of course here were the Careers. Cara knew that they would be the people were athletic and eager to kill. The boys were strong, built like football players. The girls were always agile and deadly. Cara knew that she was fit enough to keep up with them, but she didn't know if she could kill any of them. She couldn't take on more than one at once. Bu she knew that if she picked them apart she would have a chance.

"I just... I just don't know if I can do it. Kill someone, I mean. The thought of it sickens me-- even if I did end up winning, the person who comes out wouldn't be the person who went in," Emmeline whispered, looking at the ground. Even as she said the words she couldn't believe that she was. If it came down to it, if they were the last two tributes in the arena, this girl would probably kill her. Or she would have to kill the girl. She thought about Will and what she would do if she was in the same situation with him. Would either of them be willing to kill the other? The thought nauseated her and she discarded it quickly. She turned back to the girl. "You probably have more of a chance than I do-- and something to live for."

Rue~alwaysa1directioner~ (Ruealwaysa1directioner) Will was standing in the middle of the square. Guys in white masks and suits were holding Will back. They didn't want to beat him up like they were doing to his parents. He was too young. If his parents got killed, they say that they had did something wrong in the mines. But if Will died, it might raise suspicion, since he was young. And...they might possibly rebel against the Peacekeepers for killing an innocent 7-year old. Of course, they didn't want that. They know were the previous rebellion had ended. But, they wanted Will to be tortured. What his parents had done was absolutely horrible. The Peacekeepers wouldn't tell Will what his parents had done. No matter how much he cried and screamed about it as he watched his parents get beaten to death. He heard a blood-curdling scream as...

Will woke up with sweat rolling down his face. He had been having the same nightmares over and over again since he had left District 12. It was the worst thing he had ever experienced. But surely The Hunger Games will beat that. Will got up and walked out of his room towards the Pantry to get something to eat. Just as he turned around after locking his door, he saw Emmeline walking out of a room.

"No. I don't have something to live for. I have someone to live for. There are differences. I have my parents and my brothers. You may not have family or friends back at home, but there's someone who will be watching you, vying for your victory in the games. Why? Because they care, even just a little bit. Don't give up, try for that person." Cara put her hand or the girl's shoulder gently and looked into the girl's eyes. It was devastating to Cara that someone could feel as lonely as she knew this girl did.

Cara could sense people's feelings incredibly well. She thought that her meditation made her more aware of emotions. It was difficult someone's, because she could see agony through the toughest pokerface and terror behind the most blasé expressions. She knew- she saw these emotions in the Distrct Four winners of the Hunger Games every day.

Cara looked down at her wrist. She wore four seaweed bracelets each wih three pearls tied to them. She pulled one of the bracelets from her arm and put it in Emmeline's hand. "These are my tokens. But you can have one."

Cara wasn't afraid of making this friend. Likelihood was that someone else would kill the girls before they ever met in the Games. Cara knew it was dangerous to befriend a member from an outlying District, because Cara knew distrct four had a chance of being a Career. She wouldn't turn down the chance if she got it.

She opened her mouth, but was speechless. This was the most kindness she'd ever received, especially from a stranger. Something in her shifted-- if such kindness really existed, then perhaps life was worth living after all. Maybe, just maybe, Emmeline could find something to live for too. "Thank you," she breathed, unable to think clearly. "You don't know how much this means to me. Really."

For the first time in her life, Emmeline had a friend.

An idea bloomed in her head, a wild, crazy idea. She didn't brush it away immediately, and so it took hold, grew roots, grew stronger. She turned to Cara and bit her lip. She seemed like the right kind of person-- a person who would consider the idea. But a lifetime of fear still held her back. "Cara, what if....?" she blushed, looked away. "Never mind."

Cara smiled. It felt good to bring a glimmer of joy to a person. It was bittersweet that it had to go on this way, that Emmeline would most likely die before they had a chance to become good friends. Cara wanted so desperately to have someone who she knew would help her emotionally during the Games. But it was a hard decision to make before the kids even got to the Training Center. One mistake in the Hunger Games meant losing your life.

She saw something in Emmeline. Something special in her eyes. She looked like she was going to burst with an idea. Cara tried to remain respectful when Emmeline teased her with that thought and tore it away, but curiosity got the best of her. "What Emmeline? Please tell me!" she whined playfully.

She felt like she was being punched in the gut. Take down the Capitol? Was this girl crazy? Did she want to die? Cara's eyebrows squeezed together. She leaned back in her chair. Cara was scared of the Capitol. She never felt hatred of them, only painful, paralyzing fear. She trembled. She never thought of them as a force that could be overthrown.

"Emmeline, I" Cara began, but stopped sharply when she caught sight of two Peacekeepers standing guard outside the door.

Cara leaned in close to Emmeline. "It's dangerous to talk about this here. But I'm… intrigued."

Cara knew that if she was a part of a plan to overthrow the Capitol, she probably wouldn't come out alive. But she would be making a better world for her brothers and parents. It would be worth it.

Things got much more serious than Cara had ever imagined.

((Are we doing interviews?))

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

((Yes. When people get off the train we will.))

Emmeline shot up, her face suddenly stoic and cold. To Cara, she said, "I'll find you again. Consider what I said."

She walked out of the room quickly, so the peacekeepers wouldn't suspect anything. They would think that Emmeline had offered her alliance to Cara, a temporary fix in the games. But of course she had offered so much more than that. She was crazy, of course, and if she tried anything blatantly obvious she would never make it back home.

But Emmeline wasn't rash, and neither was she a fool. She was stealthy, cunning. If the capitol was to feel her wrath, then they would do so, and no one would ever suspect a thing.

Her mouth thinned in grim determination. Yes. She would have her revenge on the Capitol. On those monsters who murdered her family. They would feel her pain, over and over again, while she watched and laughed on the inside.

Feeling giddy, Emmeline almost forgot to watch where she was going and then ran straight into Will.

Sarah Kliora (sarahgraykay) Luke and Millie turned their heads slowly in the direction of where the voice was coming from. They were staring in the eyes of their mentor. She had long, wavy, jet black hair, freckles, and piercing green eyes. She stared them right in the eyes with a grin on her face as she walked over.

Millie gulped. "So, you're our mentor?"

The lady folded her arms. "Well, I'm not here to deal with kids with no common sense."

Luke stood up. "Well, don't worry about that. We're here to win." His voice was unconvincing, and at this, the lady snickered. After an awkward moment of silence, he held out his hand. "I'm Luke by the way, Luke Sevina."

"And I'm Millie Weston."

Their mentor had an annoyed look on her face and rejected Luke's hand. "As if you didn't know already, I'm Sage, your mentor."

Luke nodded, knowing that his suspicions were correct. He wasn't sure what to think of their mentor, whether he should be afraid of her, or stand up to her, but he most definately did not want to be against her. "I'll be right back. I'm going to go and check my room."

"Don't hurry!" yelled Sage flickering with annoyance.

When he finally left the room, Millie walked towards Sage and whispered, "It's nice to finally meet you then. So, got any advice on how to win these games?"

Sage smiled. "My advice? Don't trust anyone. Even that boy, Luke."

Millie seemed a little bit confused. "But wouldn't you get farther in the games if you formed an alliance?"

"Well, of course you have to join an alliance, just don't trust them. Ever. Especially that boy."

All Millie could do was nod.

After Emmeline left, a weird feeling held itself in her stomach. Coming into the train, she had thought only about surviving the Games, but now she was considering something way bigger. A plan to overthrow the Capitol rolled around in her mind. She knew that Emmeline would have to share her ideas, because Cara was overwhelmed at the thought of trying to take out the powerful, wealthy leaders.

Unease was uncomfortable company, so Cara left her cabin. She explored the train a bit, figuring out where the Career cabins were, at the front of the train, and where some viewing rooms are. She found District 4 dining room and sat in amazement. Seafoam green walls and rough wooden tables, like the docks back home. Luxurious seats with water in them gave a boating feel. The gleaming silverware had tiny minnows etched into them. It was beautiful.

She reluctantly left the dining room and noticed a boy wandering around. It was Justin, from her District. She came up from behind him and said softly, "Hey, Justin. Are you looking for something?"

Cara was embarrassed. "I'm sorry! I know that we were supposed to meet up, I just kind of got caught up in…" she looked down and waved her arms around, gesturing at everything. She wasn't going to tell anyone about Emmline. It was dangerous to share their plans with anyone. Suspicion could take place all too easily.

"So, you want to talk?" Cara said. She was trying to make up for her blunder earlier. He had been one of the best swimmers in District four and they had never really spoken to each other before. It was awkward to think that they were now partners in a way. Kids from the same district rarely killed each other, and Cara found comfort in that she wouldn't have to go up against Justin.

"Wait- let's go this way." Cara started walking to the dining room. "More privacy," she explained. She sat down at the table.

"Everything," Cara sighed. "The train, the Capitol, imminent death. It's a little much." She laughed. It was hard to talk about it, but she hoped that the more she talked about it the more she would be okay with it when the time came. "Not that I don't plan on winning or anything," she added as a side note. She was a competitor in the Games, and she would compete.

"So have you met our mentor yet?" she asked. She wondered which person would guide the tributes this year. Cara didn't mind if they were harsh, they just had to be good at what they did.
