Hi Everyone. We're moving the discussion of The Lightning Thief over here. Thanks!

I thought this whole series was wonderful. Well written, good plotting, funny and interesting. It managed to have action without excessive violence and there was nothing objectionable in terms of 'adult situations' or language.
I certainly agree that there is nothing in the Percy Jackson series that would make it inappropriate for 9+. Anyone else have an opinion on this?
Thanks Vivian! I want to remind everyone that a couple of topics were introduced before we moved the discussion here, and there's plenty of other topics we could discuss as well. [1] Anyone have an answer yet to Erik's question--what are the names of Medusa's two sisters. [2] Who's your favorite god? Thanks, folks!
Yeah. I think it is pretty cool when Percy decides to trust his father and dives off the Gateway Arch into the Mississippi River. What do you (or anyone) think is one or two of the coolest things Percy or Annabeth does?
I think one of the coolest things Percy did in book #1 is fight Ares. I think Annabeth is just cool altogether. I like the out-of-toilet swirlie that Clarisse and her mean friends got, too!
It's been awhile since I read book #1. I remember really wanting to like the book and therefore, of course, feeling a little let down. But I'm a curmudgeon, so what do I know. I do remember that I did and do recommend it for my son, who turns 10 next week. However, he's a bit easily spooked by those scenes that tend to come back and haunt him in bed when he closes his eyes. He saw the movie and there were some bits where he covered his eyes. But, for his age, I'd recommend the books and will continue to offer it to him. It just takes a bit for me to convince him he's a bit older since last time and that it wouldn't scare him now.
