Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Here is where you can submit books you would like to read for our book of the month. The book must be published before 1960. If you would like to nominate a book published after 1960 you can message me with the book and your argument for why you think we should read it.

Someone earlier suggested I make a book shelf where members can go to put up books they want to read so I and the rest of the group can see them easier without having to go through every post in this thread. I went ahead and did that today.

1. If you would like to put a book on that list you go the the "Bookshelf" link in the box at the right hand upper side of the screen.

2. Once you get there, there will be a search box labeled "add book".

3. You type in the book you want and click "add to bookshelf."

4. The bok will come up and so will a screen with a bunch of options. All you have to do is choose the book shelf and I will put in the rest of the stuff later.

5. Put it in the "To- read" list and the shelf "Book suggestions".

There I will be able to look over what books you folks would like to read a little easier. If you have any questions ask me in the "Chat it up bookworms" thread.

Haley Should we start a new discussion about our May book of the month, since April is coming to a close? Anyone have any suggestions what we should read next?

I'm voting A Tale of Two Cities.

What else? We can create a poll once we have some more books on the list!

message 3: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments I know it is not Christmas but I am going to vote for A Christmas Carol. There is also Ivanhoe and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall as some other options. I guess I will put up the poll in a few days so people will have enough time to put in their nominations.

message 4: by Haley (new)

Haley I also want to read Tess of the D'Urbervilles, but I think each person should only get one nomination per month (that way the list isn't ridiculously long), so I'm sticking by my original vote :D

message 5: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Well you can put up as many nominations as you want, but I will only pick five or six for each month and only one from each person. Unless there aren't enough people to choose from.

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) Ooh, ooh! Little Dorrit!!!!! That's my choice!!!! :D

message 7: by Nissa Tanura (new)

Nissa Tanura (nissatanura) | 191 comments how about The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn?
but let me know if there's a poll for our May book :)

message 8: by Isabel (new)

Isabel | 36 comments well, i'd love to read any of the above, but since it's my first time in this group, i guess i will have to vote for my favorite book, which is Pride and Prejudice!

message 9: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Oh I love that book! I'll have to add it to the poll.

message 10: by Giuliana (new)

Giuliana (giulianafromnewyork) I never heard of that book.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I voted for "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."

message 12: by ♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (new)

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) Aww, come on! Is anyone going to vote for my book??? ;)

message 13: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Sorry Tabi, I just really wanted to read huckleberry Finn more.

message 14: by ♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (new)

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) Fine. I guess I don't want to cause I've read it a million times! (heavy sarcasm)

message 15: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Gramuglia (anthonygramuglia) | 49 comments Just to throw my idea into the batch--though it may be too late--how about the Rape of the Lock?

message 16: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I know everybodys probably read To Kill a Mockingbird a million times and idk if the groups already done this one, but its one of my favorites!

message 17: by Nissa Tanura (last edited May 01, 2012 12:41AM) (new)

Nissa Tanura (nissatanura) | 191 comments Anthony, Ashley,
never too late for an idea and it can be one of the choice for our next month book :)
And don't forget to vote the poll! :DDD

message 18: by [deleted user] (last edited May 01, 2012 08:16AM) (new)

I am not sure if I am too late for the discussion since today is May 1. Happy May!

but I have had this book on my shelf for years and never read it....

The Brothers Karamazov

but for now, I would also be happy to read Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and save Dostoyevsky for later.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Light in August Thinking ahead to August here..

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

The Count of Monte Cristo and this one for later date as well..it is super long, we might need two months for it. ...

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Ashley wrote: "I know everybodys probably read To Kill a Mockingbird a million times and idk if the groups already done this one, but its one of my favorites!"

It is a good book, but I am hoping to read the ones that have been sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

message 22: by Haley (new)

Haley Everyone, keep putting your nominations on here for future months, this is a great list we have going, but nomination for May are over and the poll is up so please vote!

message 23: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Gramuglia (anthonygramuglia) | 49 comments Brothers Karamazov might be a good one, same with The Count of Monte Cristo.

message 24: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments The Count of Monte Cristo is awesome! I am reading right now. I have heard the "Brothers Karamazov" is a very boring book.

message 25: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Gramuglia (anthonygramuglia) | 49 comments Uh...very boring book? It's by the same guy who wrote Crime and Punishment. He tends to write long, yet awesome, books.

message 26: by ♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (new)

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) I tried to read Crime and Punishment. But, that was also when I was twelve and trying out lots of different books that had been sitting on my families bookshelves for a while. I should probably go back and read them now that I'm older.

message 27: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Gramuglia (anthonygramuglia) | 49 comments I read it in my AP Lit class a couple years ago for the first time. I read it in literally one sitting. It was just--mind blowingly good. At least, that was my opinion.

message 28: by ♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (new)

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) Yeah, well twelve year old me thought it was boring, the small print was annoying, and it was so big I'd never finish it. ;)
I'm sure I'll have a different opinion now...

message 29: by Jada (new)

Jada Stuart (JadasArtVision) | 211 comments I'm new to this sire and I've been getting into classics so I joined. Do we have discuss just one book a month nd only the ones voted on? Also I want to go ahead and post my votes for new books to discuss for the month of June. The Portrait of Dorian Gray, Sense and Sensibility, or the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

message 30: by Jada (new)

Jada Stuart (JadasArtVision) | 211 comments I ment site lol

message 31: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Bieber | 20 comments I think it would be easier for the people who are still in high school/college to try to tackle the really long ones like Brothers Karamazov or The Count of Monte Cristo during the summer when there isn't as much school to worry about :P I really do want to tackle those two classics sometime!

message 32: by Haley (new)

Haley Jada, we can discuss any books you'd like, no matter the month. Our main book discussion each month will be our group read, but if there is another book you've read that you're dying to talk about, you can create a discussion topic under the "Individual Books" folder. Let one of the mods know if you need help doing that, we're more than happy to help.

Thomas, I agree with you, but I know that might not always work out. Classics take more time (for me) to read as it is, and some of the longer older ones will take a lot of time on top of work and school. So we can try to fit those in over school breaks, but we won't always be able to make that happen :P

message 33: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments I am reading Crime and Punishment right now. I haven't gotten very far, less than twenty pages, and I have been reading it for a month! Very thick stuff.

message 34: by Jada (new)

Jada Stuart (JadasArtVision) | 211 comments Thomas, that's a good idea. I'm gonna read Karamazov this summer and I read the count of Monte cristo over Christmas :-)

message 35: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Bieber | 20 comments I know Classics take a lot longer for me to get through too, especially any lengthy ones...and I know timing doesn't always work out...I joined yesterday and I've been wanting to read Jane Eyre, oh well I'll add my two cents to the discussion on it once I do get around to reading it :)

message 36: by Haley (new)

Haley That's just bad timing :P If you ever have the time you definitely should read Jane Eyre! It's really good, one of my favorites.

message 37: by Nissa Tanura (new)

Nissa Tanura (nissatanura) | 191 comments Yes, The Count of Monte Cristo is awesome! So does To Kill a Mockingbird!
Let's put it in our choice for next month :)

message 38: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments I will, but I only pick about five to six books to put in the poll so we won't have too many different things to choose from. Eventually (if the group goes forever!) we will read them all.

message 39: by Jada (new)

Jada Stuart (JadasArtVision) | 211 comments Picture of Dorian gray, sense and sensibility, the brothers Karamazov, villette, pride and prejudice, or emma

message 40: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Oh I really want to read the "Picture of Dorian Gray". So that will certainly be on next months list.

message 41: by Jada (new)

Jada Stuart (JadasArtVision) | 211 comments Awesome :-)

message 42: by ♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (new)

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) That is a deep book...as well as creepy. Have to say I hate Dorian....

message 43: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments I saw "Legue of Extrodinary Gentlemen" not that is had much to do with any books, but that was the first time I heard of Dorian Gray, and I thought he was a very complex charter and I really wanted to learn more about him and wished there was another movie just about him. A few years later I got my wish and now I find out there is a book!

I know I live under a rock. Well mountain actually but same thing.

message 44: by ♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (new)

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) I saw that as well...did you like it? I did. :)

message 45: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) | 3184 comments Yes I did. I little corny in places, but a good fun flick without all the inappropriate materiel, which was a nice relief.

message 46: by ♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (new)

♠ TABI⁷ ♠ (tabi_card) I know...just a nice sit down and chill movie. :)

message 47: by Jada (new)

Jada Stuart (JadasArtVision) | 211 comments there's a good movie called Dorian Gray. :) watch it. very good movie. kinda explicit just to warn ya.

message 48: by Nissa Tanura (new)

Nissa Tanura (nissatanura) | 191 comments Jada wrote: "Picture of Dorian gray, sense and sensibility, the brothers Karamazov, villette, pride and prejudice, or emma"

Nice choice!
But agree with Christa, after all we should pick about 5 books for the poll :)

I've never heard about The Brothers Karamazov and now, I'm so curious because some of you said that was awesome and bad in the same time. Hehehee...

For Dorian Gray, I always want to read them after I watched The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. And not only about Dorian Gray but also all of the characters in the story.

Check this out : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...
I wish I can get some books tell about them. :DDD

message 49: by Jada (new)

Jada Stuart (JadasArtVision) | 211 comments the Brothers Karamazov is one of the more difficult classic novels. Written by Fydor Dostoevsky author of the more famous Crime and Punishment. Since it's a Russian novel you might want to be careful about which translation you get. I honestly don't care. It's the same story. Some people prefer a more accurate intrepretation though. Very long too. over 700 pages. I bought it but haven't read it yet. I read Crime and Punishment and that one was very difficult. But it had a lot of cool pychological and philosophical points
