well, if you've got the time on your hands, I'd recommend tackling one/both of these two, depending on where your interests lie (one's in medieval times, the other WWI). they're two of my 3 or 4 favorites in historical fiction.The Pillars of the Earth
Fall of Giants
if you're less ambitious, I suggest philippa gregory, especially this one.
The Other Boleyn Girl
can't help you with sci-fi, unfortunately. I like some quasi-sci-fi (like the host and some of kurt vonnegut's stuff), but I don't think they really qualify to true sci-fi fans...

I loved this book. It's a memoir that is mostly fact, but there are a few things that could be fictional, like some of the extra characters' names. It's about the author's mother who was a Jew during WWII. Her mother uses her music to get through WWII. It's very good!

I don't know if you've read it, but there's this sci-fi book called Ender's Game that I read a while ago, it was pretty good
