There's a lot of very useful self-help info on the web for independent authors promoting their own books. There's a wealth of good stuff on GoodReads.
But I do believe writers who are any good should be writing. Promotion - in the form of talking to readers is excellent, too, but I believe we need a professional body representing the best of independent writing to improve our public relations and bury, once and for all, the legacy of the "vanity publishing" stigma.
