SOS: Serious Overload of Series discussion

Would first week of June suit?

I think I'll try for this one, too. I might be a little early or a little late depending on other buddy reads and challenges, etc. I've had this one for a while, so I'll be eager to start this one.

Might a good way to read this book. Been sitting in my TBR pile for far to long. It will depend on work, but I would like to try.

Friday June 1st is fine :) gives me some good weekend reading time.

LOL, well I have a busy Saturday but I should be able to get some good reading in Friday and Sunday.

Oh I'd like to read this book too but don't know if I can join during the first week. I'll probably try to get to it sometime in June and then read your discussion. :)

No problem. The more the merrier. : ) It looks like this group hasn't had buddy reads for that long (maybe 2 months), but we've certainly been using the threads since then.

I've been meaning to start this one. I've been shuffling it around in my challenges. Geez. I have a lot of books that week, but maybe I'll stop by.

I'll be able to start it on Saturday. I still need to finish Delirium...I'll be glad when May is over and I have time to read again.

I started early and read the first chapter. (It's a little odd to me that there are only 5 chapters in the whole book.) So far it's interesting. Lots of flashbacks in the beginning. I'm going to take a little break though and read All Spell Breaks Loose.

I've read the first Chapter too. I do find the extremely long chapters a little odd too! The flashbacks I found kind of disorienting because I wasn't sure whether it was present tense or in the past. So far I do find it interesting as well, although all the weather stuff is very technical.

It's not quite what I expected so far, but I'll let you know what I find within the next few chapters.

Also everytime I hear the protagonist's name, Joanne Baldwin, I keep on thinking that it doesn't really suit the character for some reason. It's quite plain jane for an awesome weather warden.

It didn't really grab me (obviously since I was able to switch to another book), but it didn't turn me off either. I was expecting something else too, but I'm not sure what. I guess the flashbacks are(view spoiler)[to make it more exciting. Otherwise, she's just driving around, which wouldn't be too interesting for us. (hide spoiler)]

I agree. She totally needs a more exotic name. : )

I'm about to start reading it as soon as I finish dinner. I agree though about the name, I'm not a fan of mundane names in general for book characters but especially fantasy/paranormal ones.

OK I'm about 70% of the way through and pretty much the whole book so far has been a big road trip and flashbacks. I think it's an interesting way to set up the story and cover the world, keen to see what occurs at the end of the road trip.

(view spoiler)[I'm glad she finally discussed what that Demon Mark is because it is mentioned throughout the whole book and you don't to find out until later. Also just found out who Paul is. (hide spoiler)]

As technical as all of the weather stuff is, I'm still not sure how they manipulate the weather.

A whole book about a road trip, huh? Hmmm. I should get back to reading this one tomorrow, so I won't click on that spoiler (even though it's awfully tempting). I've heard that the end of this book totally changes everything, which means book 2 will be very different, I think.

Hehe, it isn't a super big spoiler, just something that you can look forward to later in the book. Once she meets Paul, things get a lot more interesting.

OK I just reached page 306 and I think I've completely lost the plot. All of a sudden all these new characters are introduced and I'm kind of confused who some of them are whenever they are bought up.

Basically the road trip thing has continued on the whole time, with the flashbacks mixing things up. Once all the world building and Jo's past gets out of the way I can see the further books in the series to be very interesting and more plot-focused.

The book sort of wraps around a mystery to do with the Demon Mark and it slowly unfolds as you travel with Jo on the road.

I'm at page 286. I'm actually really interested now to see what happens and I don't really want to put the book down, but I'm tired (2am for me).

Things definitely got better once David came into the picture, and I quite like him, I hope he's in future books. I find the descriptions of how she manipulates the weather can be a little long winded and scientific and my eyes glaze over a little bit, but it's still cool.

I just finished it last night. All my previous concerns about all the random characters quickly disappeared to an epic finale.

(view spoiler)[I found Star to be a fascinating character, letting the madness of the Demon Mark seep into her soul and slowly twist her personality into evil. You could see it affecting Jo more towards the end, as she gets more possesive and powerful.

Her becoming a djinn was a total shock, it just makes me like Paul much better! I wonder how her djinn status will fare with her weather warden powers. (hide spoiler)]

Overall it was an exciting read with an explosive ending, I think it's a 4 for me :)

I'm lurking a little bit because this has become one of my favorite series. Hang in there, the series gets really good.

Once you guys have finished, does anyone want to do a buddy read for the 2nd one in July?

I finished it today too. I really liked the ending and am looking forward to what's to come and how it affects future books. It seems to me (view spoiler)[this book is almost a prequel to the series, it sets up where the whole series will go. (hide spoiler)]

@Jeann, I'll definitely read the next book with you in July, I've already decided to add it to my July list. :)

I got to 50% last night. It has gotten MUCH better. I was a little worried at first, but I'm glad I stuck with it.

@Julianne - Excellent we can set up another buddy read yay! I do agree with what you said about the prequel, and I look forward to seeing the series go into full throttle after all this world building has been over.

@Jean - yay glad you have stuck with it! I didn't let the whole road trip thing deter me as it definitely has enough to keep you going.

I'm glad y'all enjoyed it! I really liked it when I read it, and then I devoured the rest of the series as quickly as I could. I think I finished it in a week and a half. :)

I finished it last night. Wow! That's really all I can say. Wow! I'm really looking forward to the next book; I'll definitely read it with you in July. I had heard that everything changed at the end of the book, and it definitely did.

I also liked her attachment to her cars. I must admit that I name my cars too, but I usually give them male names. Anyone else do that?

Almost forgot: (view spoiler)[I have to admit that I skimmed most of the last battle against the storm. I like the magic system. It's very unique, but a little long winded as Julianne stated. Plus, I knew the real battle was coming up. I think I enjoy it when the bad guy is really a close friend. It makes the final battle more heart wrenching. (hide spoiler)]
