Hi feminists, There's been a lot of talk in the group of late about the marriage equality movement. I, along with many others in the group, believe that it is crucial for us as feminists to stand up for the rights of women in the LGBT community to marry the women they love. It is; however, just as important for us to stand up for the rights of women to live peaceful lives with the men they love, which is why I think the unprovoked killing of Oscar Grant by the BART police is an important feminist issue, reflective of a larger trend in society for unarmed black men to be shot by police officers and security guards without provocation and without legal recourse. The men who have been killed or wounded in this and similar incidents across the country are our brothers, fathers, and children and actions must be taken to break the silence about a systematic miscarriage of justice that is costing innocent people their very lives.
Here is a petition in support of a new bill that would create an independent civilian oversight committee to monitor BART police actions and policies: http://www.couragecampaign.org/page/s...
The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights is requesting donations for the family of the deceased. If you would like to make a donation please send checks made out to "Wanda Johnson" (Oscar's Mother) to:
Ella Baker Center 344 40th Street Oakland, CA 94609
If anyone can think of anything else constructive that can be done by individuals or the group, please post to this thread.
